Looking at replacing the old MAK90. I see that the post-post ban AKs run a wide range from the cheaper WASR-10s to the all-US made types that run close to $1000. I also see a lot of trash talk about the Romanian rifles as well, don't know if it's deserved. What would be a good example that would run about $500-600 and not necessarily all the rails, scope mounts, etc.?

Not sure of the current pricing but I totally love my VEPR (Russian) AK. I have 2 Romanian's I bought for $300 each back in I believe 1999. They shoot ok and have functioned with no issues. No where near the build quality of the VEPR though.

Do all of the WASR rifles have that ugly scope mount on the left side of the receiver?

No. The underfolders are not side mount compatable so they lack the mount. The rest usually do. The "certified" WASR's from Henderson Defense Industries are a good value as they correct the magazine issues and RSB/GB/FSB cant. Avoid IO Inc too many QC issues. The VEPR is very nice and one of the most accurate AK's due to the heavier trunion/receiver.

If you have any other ? feel free to ask.

I have two WASRs and what they lack in quality they make up for in reliability. Fired thousands of rounds with no failure to feed or eject using the cheapest ammo I can find and cheaper than dirt TAPCO mags. If you can get past the scope mount rail on the side and aren't looking for one hole groups they're tough to beat, especially considering the AK isn't supposed to be a precision rifle and isn't going to shoot tiny groups at 1000 yds (at least not in 7.62x39...)

I traded into a really nice one earlier this year. It's an Arsenal SGL20. It has the ugly side rail on it but I've put it to good use. I put a R.S. mount on it and an Aimpoint PRO. The red dot sight is the biggest improvement I've ever done to an AK-47. It's fast and reasonably accurate. I haven't shot any groups with it but I don't have any trouble bounching around a coke can at 200 yards with it.

Considering the rifle is made to kill 160lb capitalist I figure it's accurate enough Cool

The rifle seems well built, doesn't have any visable machine marks and has a decent finish. Overall I'm happy with it.

Considering that you want to rid yourself of a fine Ak, I would have to give a second vote for the Arsenal SGL and SLR series of rifles. Next to a custom build, IMHO this is the premier AK platform on the market. More money, but they are quality

I'm an AK guy at heart. The Hungarian AMD-65 done up by Tennessee Guns International (TGI) is a best buy. The AMD is a liitle odd looking compared to other AK's but it handles the best, to me anyways. Here is mine with a few accessories.

That would be the Arsenal SGL20 and SGL21. These come out of the Russian IZHMASH factory and are assembled in the Legion division (Izhmash's custom shop) from hand choosen parts. They are imported into the USA in a legal configuration. When they get to Arsenal Inc. They are modified into an AK configuration. The finished product is very nice.

There are a lot of countries that make AK pattern rifles. I think it's kinda neat to have a Russian one. It's been a long time since that was possible. Russia and AK go together like peanutbutter and jelly.

They say the Arsenal Inc. SLR series Bulgarian rifles are pretty nice too.

....on second thought, why not just de-ban the mak? A nice set of ironwood designs furniture and you are pretty much in business. If you want to get fancy, you can also have the muzzle threaded and screw on a muzzle nut or slant brake.

Check out WWW.theakforum.net.

I've got that tee shirt. Wink Mine turned out nice but I still prefer the SGL to the MAK.
