I'd like to play with a 7.62x39 rifle but I'm not a big fan of the sight system on the SKS or AK. Does anyone make an AK type rifle with an aperture type sight on the rear of the action like the Galil?

TIA

CZ USA sells the VZ58 which is a nicer type of 7.62x39 rifle.

Try to find a Valmet 7.62x39.

They are a well made AK "type" rifle.
They have a rear peep sight.

LOL! I "passed" on a Valmet in 5.56 twenty years ago at a gunshow in Houston and bought my AR15A2 instead because the magazines were cheaper. The prices were the same and I've still got the AR but the Valmet would be worth three times as much today.
Never take any investment advice from me. hilbily

I wouldn't mind a Valmet but to hijack my own thread. One of our local shops had a Valmet come in from an estate auction and when the shop listed it on one of the online auction sites ATF came by for a visit. After a trip to the lab the rifle now resides in a destruction bin because it was considered to have a full auto receiver.

The Galils are worth more than three times their original price! Sheeshhhh, some things are just nuts.

I've got 5.56mm rifles I'm in the mood to play with a 7.62x39. Lord knows I've got $ to waste on different ammo, brass, bullets and dies. lol

The type of rifle I'm looking for is like this one formerly made by Krebs :

I know that the sight mounted on the dust cover isn't going to win at Camp Perry but surely you could endanger an IPSC sized target at 200 yards. Cool

I bought one of Kreb's first comps at the USPSA Nationals some years ago. He commented at the time that they now had enough money to get home. He turned out to be one hellova pistol smith! His comps are still better than anything else I own.

I built a mount that put a held a 2x pistol scope at the scout position for IPSC with my Galil. Makes a terrific combination. Was WAY before the advent of the EOTech which would be better. Checked a couple of weeks ago and found that I had bought two scope mounts for the rifle at the time ... so an EOtech may get there yet Wink

Rick I have a spare AK flat dust cover if you want to play with putting a rail on it!

First of all, you don't want one of those century Galils. I have heard nothing good about the quality of the steel used in those. You also don't want a rail system that replaces the top cover on an AK (crappy and holding zero). If you can't become used to standard AK sights, the only real option is this one by Krebs. Still, at $275 in a world where a non-WASR AK can still be had for $399 in places, I think I would just get used to the AK sights. Smiler

I haven't seen any great solutions for AK iron sights. Some folks like the XS Big Dot system but in my opinion, the normal AK sites are fine if used as a back up for a better primary sighting system.

This gets me to my second opinion (I have lots of them)

Most modern military forces are moveing to optical sights of various types.
Nato forces use a mixture of ACOGs, ELCANs, EOTECHs, Aimpoints, etc.

The eastern block forces have gotten in on the act with the PK-AS, COBRAs, PSOPs, etc.

This is all because a single point sighting system is faster and more accurate for the average soldier under stress. (No front to rear sight mis-alignment issues with a cross hair or red dot.)

Thus, I would recomend any of the above mentioned optical sights mounted on a BP-02 side mount or UltiMACK rail as a primary sighting system for a social carbine like the AK.

Spending good money to improve a system that will still be second best doesn't make good sense.

Sadly the AK type rifle is just not very accurate compared to US rifle standards....

They work and they shoot OK for combat, but none of them will compare to a good AR...

And in todays world their mags and ammo are fairly pricey....

Apparently Krebs and Robinson Arms have both given up on receiver mounted peep sight AK's.

After climbing the mountain to talk with the local AK guru (OK, he brought some of his latest rifles to our range) I've decided to spend my money on a different project for now, a S&W 325 .45acp revolver.

Thanks for the input fellows.

The 325 Night Guard, I haven't carried a 2 1/2" revolver as an offduty gun for a long time. Big Grin

It came in the other day and I've put a hundred or so rounds through it so far. I'll post in the pistol section when I get a better feel for the little cannon. BOOM

I got one of those a while back, I really like it.

Many years ago I carred a Mod 25 in 45 ACP as a work gun.

Too bad for that gun. It turns out that there were a few receivers that had a few holes in the right places for full-auto if you had the right parts. How these slipped out of the factory is anyone's guess. As soon as ATF found out, they were on the trail like stupid on a certain Kenyan. If anyone has one, keep it under the couch until you really need it-- which might be sooner than we all think...
