For functionality in any conditions-an AK 47 gets the nod. Valmet's are Finnish refined/polished AK's. For the weapon that will not slam fire by mechanical design in full rock-n-roll an HK 91 gets the nod. Tropic/Jungle conditions,Arid/Sandbox conditions being the other extreme don't hold a candlestick to Arctic conditions. I bear witness to an Arctic experiment with an AR-15,AR-10,M1A,AK-47,MK-91 & an SKS that were douced with water, cycled, chambered, safety applied & set aside out of doors at -48 degrees ambient. 8 Hrs later the only weapon that operated was the AK-47. The M1A fired but would/did not cycle. The AR-15,AR-10,HK-91 & SKS would not fire.

what about FN FAL or CAL? has anyone tested them under advers condition?. regards yes Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

Yes, the British. The SLR was used by Arctic Warfare Cadre and a heap of others. you had to clean it a certain way.

I used one until I retired from the Canadian army.In the winter when we had them in our tents they would lock up do to condenstion but we fixed that by putting are foot on the charging handle and pushing down to open the action. As to how they work in the winter elements they work just fine. I have used G3 and AK and had no problems. If you look aroud the world the three rifles you see with armys and freedom figters are the AK, G3, FN FAL. short and fat and hard to get at, hit like a hammer and never been hit back.

There's a lot better choices out there, but as far as quality goes, an Arsenal or Red Jacket AK are on par with a PTR-91, the PTR will be a lot more powerful and a bit more accurate. Hope this helps you out.

Dan, the only problem with that test is, if you are in frozen conditions where are you going to get liquid water on your rifle???? Some tests are just unrealistic. It is a GIVEN that an AK 47 is one reliable rifle... I have shot one a great deal... I have probably shot more rifle rounds through AR 223 type rifles than any other.... But I always had some Break Free to put in the gun durring the day. I have shot in some sandy conditions, many times over 1000 rounds per day, with NO malfunctions... I have a;lso shot an AK 47 over 900 rounds in one day with no added lube, again no malfunctions. I have also used H&K 33K, and 93 [both 223] and a H&K 91 as work rifles. I have also shot H&K 93 and 91 rifles for sport and huntied with a 91 a fair amount. I have a friend that kept a H&K 91 in his van ahd shot it several thousand rounds for over a year, and never cleaned or oiled it. I have never had an H&K malfunction, nor did my buddy in his test. A H&K 91 is one of my most favorite rifles. I have shot them a LOT. I have killed several deer, antelope, and turkeys with one, including my second best deer and antelope with one. I am seldom very far from one.... For a "civilian' the fact that it is a 308, makes it suitable for most game, moose and under... The H&K's are very easy to scope, and again that is a big plus for "civilian" use. They are very accurate. IMHO the H&K 90 series are some of the most reliable rifles on the Planet, as are the AK type rifles. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I've shot a lot of HK as we have 2 in my dept's armory and they are IMHO as good as the AK's for functionality in adverse conditions. I have VEPR and Bulgarian AK's in 5.56 and 7.62x39. . Both shoot in bad stuff as well as HK but the VEPR is much more accurate. Overall accuracy no is all HK. BUT colders I've run them in is -5F/ so that aint gonna qualify for artic.

One of the advantages of the H&K roller locked system, is that there is no gas system to get fouled or corroded up. Most all the action parts on an H&K are fairly large and are easily cleaned. Even the chamber, with its flutes, will allow the rifle to function with a rusty pited chamber. Of course there are limits to every mechanical device. Some maintance is required. Let me add if a person just cannot "stand" an AR type rifle, the H&K 33/93 type rifles are very good, I have used them for several years. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Let's think about this for a second. If you are planning combat operations in either jungle, arctic, or a desert environment, then possibly your question needs a valid answer. But if you think about it all the rifles mentioned have been used by major powers, by thousands of soldiers, in just those varied conditions. For a civilian type, just plinking, home defending, hunting, or just about anything else, any of these rifles are a good choice. All rifles require certain maintenance for certain weather conditions, period. Doesn't make a difference about the design, specific conditions require specific maintenance. No or little oil in sandy or freezing weather. Daily cleaning in very humid and wet climates. goes on and on. The real question should be, "what do I like, and how much can I afford?"
