Thanks,

The mil spec 22's were dedicated upper .223 bore w/20rd magazine inserts to 10rd 22 LR.
The Army had their version & the Air Force had their version.(slight variations between carriers/mag inserts)

Commercial inserts are available to fire 22LR in .223/5.56 chambered barrels through a couple venders: Ceiner in FL among others.
The commercial inserts replace the bolt/carrier group, install the insert, load a mag & shoot.

Keep'em in the X ring,

I'd just buy a 10/22. That is a lot more satisfying than trying to run rimfire through a centerfire bore. Accuracy, reliability, everything is so much better.

I've got a Ciener with 30 rd. mags. But I would recommend your friend buy a dedicated .22LR upper if he wants something pretty accurate.

The Cieners and military subcaliber conversion kits aren't super accurate.

Compass Lake Eng.(www.compasslake.com) offers dedicated 22lr uppers for the 15, pricey but they do work. Most 22lr are twisted at 1/16 and if you are using mil spec barrel of 7,8,or 9(early ones were 12) wont work so well accuracy wise. See some of the new Ruger 15style 22's going for around 500 bucks and also S&W offers one as well.
