I'm looking for info re the 45 ACP in a modern semi-auto carbine. All those listed in the title of this thread seem very well suited. I especially like the way the CX4 Beretta looks, primarily because the magazine in in the handle, which makes the whole rifle handier. I'm especially interested in the possibility of using the 45 Super ACP in one of the carbines. I don't know much on the subject, but speculating a little, I suspect the AR is the easiest to adapt to the extra pressure and recoil, by merely changing a spring to keep the bolt from slamming back too hard. I don't know if the other two will handle the 45 Super, or could be easily adapted. I'm figuring the AR bolt and receiver can easily handle the pressures of the 45 Super. Most the AR's are blow back, not all. You can have a direct impingement one built. With that said you don't have the strong lock up if blow back. While back you could buy an upper in a 460 Rowland which is a pretty dang hot 45. They had the barrels for 1911's too. I have the HK USC Carbine which is one heck of an accurate carbine. I like it very much and is very light.

I bought a Mech-Tech carbine conversion for my Glock 21 .45ACP. I haven't shot it yet, but if it works (no FTFs, no FTEs, no spent cases in my face), it will become one of my home defense options. George

I would be interested too in what you think of the Mec Tec. This post also brings up a question that I have, and if it needs to be moved George, please do. Many months ago there was a discussion about T/C Contenders being switched from pistol to carbine form and back. There was a concensus that once you put a carbine barrel on the T/C frame, to go back to a pistol barrel was to be making a short barreled rifle with no tax stamp and therefore a felony. At times I remember that discussion got a bit heated. So the question is, what is the difference between Mec Tec and T/C/ You are taking the serial numbered part of the gun, converting from pistol to rifle and then back again. To me it seems that it is the same with the T/C. I personally have owned T/C's and have switched back from pistol to rifle or vice versa many times and never worried about it, but there are some posters on this forum that believe that if you do a black helicopter will land behind you at the shooting range and whisk you off to Gitmo. Just curious of your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Mike, You can convert a pistol into a rifle and back. All that matters is how the receiver/frame was originally registered. There was a recent 'clarification' issued by BATFE , in August IIRC. George

George - You have to also consider individual state laws. In some states a stocked pistol would be banned as a "short barreled rifle". .

My question was in reference to carbines - 16" barrels or longer, in order to focus the discussion, hopefully, on the use of the 45 Super ACP in one of the semi-auto carbines. The question I asked isn't really relevant to say a TC Encore, because the pressures, blowback, breech face pressure, etc, isn't an issue with strong recievers such as the Encore. The 45 Super will never be intentionally loaded to pressures excessive of the Encore. Besides, with something like the Encore, there are plenty of better choices, starting with the 45 Long Colt. I'm just trying to figure out what is reasonable in the semi-auto carbine. If I wanted to keep it simple, I could settle for the plain old 45 ACP, but it would be nice to soope it up a bit (safely) in that handy package. Check with Ace Custom or ROBAR to see if they convert either Mech-Tech or a Kriss carbine for you. George

Those units look awesome to me. That's the kind of info I'm looking for, since I knew nothing about this previously. For the 45 Super, looks like the Full size Glock, and a Mech-Tech carbine upper would be a great combo. I don't know if anything extra would be needed to handle the 45 Super, but now I know who to ask. I have one of those too and they are awesome plus pretty dang accurate. I got mine long ago when they weren't so expensive. Now you can buy them with the short barrel, which makes them look better and yes you have to have the tax license.

If you want a pistol-caliber AR with more whack than a .45 ACP, Olympic makes (or at least made) 10mm AR uppers. I think one of those would be good for both home defense and short range hunting.

Lone Wolf Distributing in Northern Idaho makes AR-15 lookalikes for pistol calibers using Glock magazines. I do not know if they offer just an upper conversion, but others do.
