Fixed vs adjustable stock

Lads,

One more quick question before the "Jack - Body Count - Bauer" show comes on.

Again, not familiar w/the AR group, but am in the market. Many come w/an adjustable stock, I would prefer a fixed one. If I can only obtain an adjustable one, can I retrofit it w/a fixed one.

Most likely AR's available will be either DPMS or Bushmaster. Leaning toward DMPS, but interested in your thoughts.

Newbie here, so be kind Wink. Looks like serious folks giving serious advice here. Just what I'm looking for.

Yes, your tele-stock can quickly and easily be changed to an A2 or any other style fixed stock. One of the great things about AR's is that they are completely modular and swapping components is, for the most part, a bolt-on operation requiring only the most basic of tools. I don't know what use you have in mind for your AR, and while Bushmaster and DPMS both make fine rifles, you might do well to check out Rock River. I bought their NM A2 and couldn't be happier-paid less than I would have for a Bushmaster or a DPMS too. By the way, what part of the UP are you from, I've hunted extensively in the Gwinn/Trenary area and spent a few opening weeks in Baraga and Blainey Park as well.

I have Lewis machine and Tool, LMT, collapsible stocks on all my ARs. Comfort of A2 with versatility. One thing to consider when buying an AR is not all ARs are built alike. Buy the best you can afford, do some research first! Noveske, LMT, Daniel's Defense, Colt. Nothing wrong with RRA, Bushmaster or DPMS but they are not the quality of the others listed.

Juggernaut,

Thanks for the info.

I used to live in Williamston and did a lot of trap shooting up in your area at Linden and Durand.

Currently live near the medieval village of Nahma between Rapid River and Cooks. My hunting camp is south of Cooks on the Garden Peninsula.

I need to do some horse trading to get the gun so I've got to deal w/a local shop. They have a tough time getting anything, so my choices may be limited.

Primary use will be home defense, but I also like to wring all the accuracy I can out of a gun. I want something more accurate than my Mini-14. Probably use it on coyotes, porkys and fox. I won't be shooting deer or X's with it.

Small world-I'm a member of the Linden Sportsmen Club myself. As a matter of fact I'll be toting the Rock River over there on Sunday for the first High Power match of the season.

If you are using an AR for home defense and want a fixed stock, you may consider Rock River's "Entry" buttstock. It is shorter than the standard A2 stock but is fixed.

Magpul also makes several good versions of adjustable stocks.
I can tell you from experience that using a full length A2 barrel and stock for interior work is a pain. The shorter stock and barrels are very practical.

You will have to change the stock, buffer, and spring if you change from collapsible stock to a fixed stock. Not a biggie.

Other people thought this was funny...I didn't. When Colt first came out with the adjustable buttstock for the AR, around 78 or so, I bought one. At the time, I had a full beard. Every time I fired that thing, my beard got caught in the stock. I developed a flinch from that. The next gunshow, I traded my adjustable CAR stock for a fixed one and never looked back. I still have the gun, fixed stock and all.
I also find it much easier to shoot, and when tucked under my arm, not much longer than the adjustable one. It is also the same length every time I bring it to my shoulder.
Both will work fine (bearded gents may be an exception Big Grin), and it just depends on what you like. Try to go to a shooting range and see if you can talk someone into letting you shoot both.

There is something else to consider when swapping a shorty for a fixed, and that is the duration of the gas curve. The short stock is usually attached to a short, 16-inch barrel that has its gas port at about ten inches from the boltface. This leads to a reduced burst of gas, and the spring and buffer is sized for this short burst. A long stock is sized for the gas port being about 14 inches from the boltface, which provides for a longer, "softer" burst of gas. It is not uncommon for a short barrel to not function well with a fixed stock...

Thanks lads,

I'll have to wait until I obtain a rifle to see what brand, stock length, barrel length, etc. before I put your much appreciated recommendations into practise.

Hope others have learned something here as well.

Mike
