Gun shop this weekend, and now doing some serious grief counseling with my therapist . . . Model 1894 Winchester, 22" octagon barrel. Serial # 28289, which puts mfg. date at 1895 - 1896. It'd been refinished. No patina whatever, just smooth wood and blue steel. Remington rolling block, in 38-55 I think. I didn't look past the refinish job. Deep blue and refinished furniture so that the backstrap sat about 1/8" above the wood. Another shop had a Remington falling block, about 45 cal. Someone had sawed about 2" off the end of the barrel. "Probably seemed like a good idea at the time" -- was the dealer's observation. Springfield Trapdoor Carbine -- missing the ring on the side and the trigger had been replaced. Fair to middling, $800. Full size Trapdoor, missing the rear sight. $800 But the 1894 Win. has me in tears. | ||
