Jens, Looks like an M1896 variant with a turned down bolt. The 1898 on the left side of the receiver is not necessarily the model but was sometimes the year of manufacture. A high resolution photo of the receiver ring and adjacent barrel markings might be useful. Read the book by Paul S. Scarlata "Mannlicher Military Rifles" ISBN 1-931464-14-6 for more information. Also send your detailed photos with a request (in German) to Steyr here: STEYR MANNLICHER GmbH & Co KG Postfach 1000 Ramingtal 46 4442 Kleinraming | Austria Phone: +43 (0) 7252 896 0 Fax: +43 (0) 7252 896 53 E-Mail: office(at)steyr-mannlicher.com

Macifej, I know the name of a Mauser collector that helped me identify one of these in 8X57 rimmed. He has contacts in both Germany and the Netherlands. I think he has since moved on to Mannlichers too and could help Jens.

Excellent! I haven't found this exact rifle anywhere either. The closest is the Portuguese 1896 in the same caliber. Let me know what you guys find, I'm very curious to know how many were built and for whom. Thanks
