I think that Winchester started it with the Model 70. It was a successful rifle and others got on the 7 bandwagon. Marketing. Besides, 7 is the lucky number. ......civilize 'em with a Krag

There's a legend that the Model 70 got it's name from the length of the barrel tennon or some other dimension. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I took notice of the large number of sevens as well. Any guess where my avatar name came from? ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

Nope--in the 1920s and 1930s Winchester came out with a bunch of different models and numbered them in sequence (61, 62, 63, 64, 65 etc.) When the M70 was first made in 1936, the next available model number was 70. It could just as easily have been 69 or 71 or something else. And yes, it is no accident that the Remington 700 series or the Ruger 77 tried to capitolize on the huge reputation and success of the Model 70 legend.
