I have a beautiful Austrian Mannlicher carbine in caliber 8x50R. It is obviously an old custom piece. It has a straight pull 1895 Mannlicher action with double set triggers. The left side of the receiver ring is stamped 477E. This carbine has a very slim blond walnut stock shaped and coloured very much like that on my old 8x56 M-S 1908 carbine. The right hand shooter's cheekpiece is small and the full length forearm and slender pistol grip are checkered. There is a dark horn nosecap about an inch long with just the hint of a schnable. There are 2 barrel wedges with escutcheon plates and a sling loop of thin flat steel. The grip cap is steel. The blueing is very old but still very good. The buttplate is like that of the M-S, polished steel with a trap door with the stock having a deep top hole and two shorter holes. The rear sling loop is missing. The rifle has a 19.5 inch long straight taper barrel with a solid rib, engraved with lengthwise wavy lines, except for a place in blank with the following engraved, "A Antonitschk & K Hoflieferant in Ferlach". The rear sight has one standing leaf marked 100_200 and a folding leaf marked 300. The front sight is a replacement. The bore is bright and I have fired it with decent hunting accuracy at 100 yards. I have always speculated that this was a GI bringback but I'm not sure because of the " in Ferlach". I thought the German/Austrian would be "im". So maybe it was made for export. The dealer I bought it from was fully unaware of any information. I hope that someone can fill in all the related information about the who, what, where, etc. on this Thanks in advance for any information. ned | ||
