picked up a herters 257 weatherby mag with a u9 98 mauser bolt acording to my gun smith. in taking it down i found the barrel was made by Harry McGowan guns I am going to get rid of it and would like to know something about what one would think of the value. barrel should be reblued, outside got some moisture, bore is shiney and clean.bull barrel everything looks good.
any input would be apreciated.

Too little information to give sound advise. McGowan makes great barrels and barrels even better than that. The bull makes it a hard gun to sell; you will need the right buyer. You make no mention of the stock. Unless it has some special wood it sounds like a $350 tops gun to me since it needs reblued.

From your pics:

That is in the $350-$500 range with that hinged floorplate assembly and double set triggers. It could go a little higher depending if that is an FN action, many Herter's have FN actions. I see the thumb charger cut as in most military receivers, but early FN's had it as well. I see no safety? That is not too big of an issue for a bench gun, but is more of a detractor than asset for sure. ETA: That is more like a heavy sporter/lighter Varmint contour on the barrel. That will definitely make it easier to sell.

O.K. I drooled long over the Herter catalogue in my misspent youth. The XKE and "J" actions were, reportedly by De Haas, factory 2nds of the Mark X Mauser out of Yugoslavia Industries, etc. The U9 was made by BSA in England. Birmingham Small Arms, also makers of motorcycles and other machined products. Nice action. Prices sound close. I don't recall Herter offerring the .257 Weatherby, so it is probably a re barrel. If it is working??? You want that much horsepower? Nice platform for about anything '06 length or shorter. Luck

Yes on the J9 (although I don't think they were in any way "seconds"). The short XKE action was made in Germany by an unknown (to me) manufacturer. The U9 (BSA) action is in no way a Mauser 98 pattern. It is a unique action and fairly good one.
