A long time ago I bought a Colt Python 6" serial Nr 61413, and was told it was an older one of higher quality. I never checked this, and was happy shooting it once in a while. It is in excellent condition, and I often use it to demonstrate the quality of Colt workmanship. But today Im more enclined toward fine rifles and might trade it. I need to know, however, is it old and special? Am I stupid to trade it? Any Colt experts? Boha

boha, I had an early Python and it also had a 6" barrel. While I could shoot pistols quite well then I never liked the heavy barrel on that Python. At the same time I had a nice Colt Officers Match in .38 Special and I would keep that gun over the Python any day. I also never really liked the .357 Mag cartridge. I suppose it's good for police but I think of targets and hunting. I tried to compete with friends who had .44 Mags and the 357 just made lots of noise. My barrel cracked at the forcing cone. I live near Colts and I just drove up there and the foreman put a new barrel on while I watched. If you want a nice old Colt look for a Woodsman.

There is no discussion that Pythons are very nice guns and many consider it a "classic". However, unless you are a collector, I believe they are over priced for someone who wants a shooter. In my area Pythons go from $800 to $1,100 for the newer models. If you prefer rifles now....by all means, sell it.
