My dad just aquired a S&W 38 spl revolver. I haven't seen the gun but he says it is a 5 shot blued with mother of pearl grips with a 2" barrel. What really got my attention is that he says the serial number is in the high 7000's.... Thats right.. Not a typo...I said 7000's. From the little I know doesn't that make this a very old gun? He said it doesn't look like a turn of the century piece. Anyone have ideas on what this could be?

A photo and additional description is necessary to ~date the revolver. If it's a steel J frame, then it's probably a Model 36. If it's a K frame, then it's probably a Model 10. Don't get too excited about the 7000 serial number range. Is there a letter proceeding the serial number? Smith also did model ranges like 10-2, 10-3, etc. And most of the turn-of-the-century .38's were 38 Smith & Wesson not the later .38 Special caliber. Need a lot more information/details before anything close to a good guess can be made. Thanks for the info.... I will post the details after I get a chance to look the gun over. One more detail I forgot to mention is that it is hammerless.

When you get the details you might post your question on: http://smith-wessonforum.com. These folks are a tremendous resource for information on S&W arms. You can also go the the S&W web page and get the address for a Mr. Jinks, who is their historian, he can letter the pistol for you for about $35. NRA Patron Life Member
