I posted this in the Military section but got no takers. Maybe this is a better forum for it.

"I don't have much experience with military rifles, so I'm turning to you guys for some info. A good buddy of mine asked me this past weekend to help him go through his brother's gun collection. His brother passed away a few years back and the family didn't have the heart to go through it until now. Anyway, there aren't many rifles because he was more into the historic nature of them instead of shooting. However the ones he did have are very nice. The one I took particular notice to, since I do mostly long range shooting, was an Enfield Mk1 No.4 .303(T). It is housed in the original wood box, complete with scope, ammo and leather scope covers. Aside from knowing that this is a British sniper rifle from WWII, I couldn't really find much on it, except that others are selling for $2-3k. I don't think he wants to sell it, but I figured I would find some info on it. Do you guys have any specific knowledge or experience with this rifle? How is it as a shooter?"

I a word, That rifle is worth more as a collectors item than a shooter if it is origional and the scope serial is stamped into the top of the handgrip of the stock. If the serial number stamped does not match the scope then the scope was changed out at some point and while not a truly "origional" rifle still worth a bunch to the collector. How does it shoot? I have one without the scope(Savage) and it shoots better than I do with the iron sights
Seriously these were the hand picked, off the line test fired best rifles and then they were accuritized (sp?).

A couple websites to look at
Ian Skinnerton has written a quite a few of the books on the Enfield and the Mrk #4(T) Sniper Rifle.
I have 'The BRITISH SNIPER and also '303 No.4 (T), An Armourers Perspective' Both are extremly informative.

Another good site with quite a bit of reloading and ammunition related information

http://www.303british.com/

Last but not least is a good 303 newsgroup

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/smellysmleshooters/

Hope this helps!
