I'm curious if anybody here has tinkered with atlatls? A bunch of us went on a M/C ride after church yesterday and finished a 90 mile ride down at a local state park. Surprise! They County Dept of Parks & Recreation had an atlatl demo going on with about 100 boy scouts there.
Easton apparently offers 48" thick wall shafting, something like a 2620. I had a blast for about twenty minutes between the time we got there and the barbecue being ready.
Any of you admit to this little walk on the wild side?

calgarychef1I haven't used one, but my hunting buddy talks about them a lot. Seems thay have pretty poor accuracy, but lots of fun anyway. I think something like a moose sized target at 15 yards is their best MOA.

akperrydogI have a little experience with atlatl's...I have a buddy that has one of those commercially made ones with the take down Easton darts. Alot of fun to play with, but I need a lot more practice to be dangerous to anything at more than about 15 feet. You can really whip that dart out there....I can throw it 60 or 70 yards, I bet with experience someone could get 100 with it.
The friend I have got it thinking he would kill a caribou with it...he hasn't spent enough time to feel comfortable going after one. I think the learning curve is kinda steep, YMMV.

L. David KeithWe have two knap-in's each year in middle TN. Not only are flint knapper's showing their craft, but sometimes we have Atl-atl competitions. Check this site out if you want to know more about the Atl-atl.

thanks for the website. I spoke with the gentleman for about half an hour this evening. He talked about winning the competition held in Montana every summer, and of his work producing Museum Quality artifacts. He says he can stack darts inside a n 18" circle at 50 yards. Now I know what some of the stone widgets I have found were for. You tune the atlatl itself by moving a weight (stone) back and forth along the "Baton De'Commandment" to match up the flex of the darts. He also says 80mph with a 24" atlatl and 72" darts. The artifacts, and studies of the three main aboriginal groups (Australians and New Guinea and Amazon tribesmen) show a pretty consistent 3:1 ratio of dart length to Atlatl length. Stanadard shaft material today is an Easton 2216 shaft with a 4-5" 3-fletch design.
Now, I have to get a dozen of those shafts from Easton and make an Atlatl. I am soooo glad I retired last fall, I'd never have time for work with all of the fun stuff I found to do.

I am deadly with it to about 8 yd's but at 10 yd's you need the strength of a griz to keep it up in the hay bale. I stuck it in the 4x4 frame and played the devil gettin it out. After an hour my arm felt like I was shooting a .458 all day. Maybe every day for a few years I might be OK at 10-12 yd's.
