I recently hunted a mountaintop in TZ that was a swamp between 0600 and Noon, then a desert the rest of the time.

I used Gateway Feather Dry waterproofing in TZ and it worked to a degree, but the feathers seemed to clump to about 2/3 of their normal height - not from water but from the powder. This powder weighed next to nothing.

So for my AK grizz hunt (where it rains 2 days of 3) I am trying something new: GINK. This is made for dry flies, and it is an oily substance. I coated the fletchings with it then heat-soaked them in my truck in the Denver summer sunshine. The oil seems to spread evenly into the feathers, and is totally waterproof in any short test (shower test.) It does add 6 grains to the total fletching weight for my 3 fletch 2.125" Gateway shield cut fletches. This almost doubles the fletch weight (not counting glue) but it is still much lighter than plastic vanes. I am anal about keeping the maximum FOC (weight forward) in a hunting arrow, so this seems good to me.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Don, I use the Bohning powder-it"s probably the same stuff as you used, Ilike it but I've heard the stuff you're using is good. There's also a tire cleaning compound called "black magic" that some folks swear by. For the last few years I've just been tying a plastic bag around the bottom of my bowquiver and over the fletching-it works well.

True dat! I think we'll have to compare skid marks in our undies and see who got closer Eeker for the shot.

The first time I tried that Bohning waterproofing powder I shot an arrow at a grouse in a tree and I dang near had a heart attack! There was a huge puff of white powder that seemed like some kind of explosion. I honestly didn't know what was going on and had to check myself and my bow for damage.

Good luck to you too, I leave on Sept 13, when are you going?

I used to spray my feathers with Scochgard. That helped a lot.
I stopped and avoid rain these days.
