My son turned 5 last May. He went to the archery shop and saw a Hoyt Banshee. Since Dad shoots a Hoyt he was gonna die with out it. He talked about it for months. So for his B-day I got him one. He shoots a release and fingers well and all my buddies think he shoots well which he does. Paper plate at about 8 yards. He shoots more than me in our basement (after asking permission and supervised). I have been trying to tighten up his form but he has his own way. I tell him he could shoot way better if he listened but he is a a hard head like mom. Sooo I see the archery shop has youth lessons. 2 hours on Sat Mornings cost 30 bucks for 5 weeks costs less than range time for me. Is he too young? Thought he would do better with a a stranger coaching him for awhile. The guys at this shop are great. He is really in to it and I do not want to push anything on him.

See if he wants to shoot in the group with coaching. If so then go for it and let him have fun. Next spring take him out stump shooting to get used to shooting at unmarked distances. Have fun and enjoy!!!!

I agree with Amosgreg - If they have a youth group he'll make new friends and the peer pressure will make him want to improve his form. He'll be teaching you in a month. I started shooting in competition when I was 5. These are a couple of cartoons from one of our original club members. I grew up in Buffalo Field Archery Club in Houston.
