Just curious... How many of you here now BOWHUNT with a 50# draw weight or there abouts? I'm getting into the sport and I just purchased a used bare bow 2007 Ross CARDIAC 33" ATA/ 50-60# DW/ 29" DL in excellent condition... I'm having a good buddy of mine set it up with HHA Optimizer Single pin sight, Trophy-Taker Top-Slot Drop-away FC Rest, Sims S-Coil Stabilizer, and G5 Meta-peep... This will be coming out of his and his friends Pro Shop "SUPERTUNED"....They are super-experienced in setting up the 07 CARDIAC they are proven and have meticulouly worked on many of them already and the reason why I have chosen them especially... It will be a SWEET shooting rig for sure! Now my dilemna... I want this rig to shoot as SMOOTH as BUTTER and instead of shooting a 60# draw weight which is not a problem at all, I am contemplating on shooting it with a 50# draw weight instead!!! I want it to be a FUN shooting hunting bow...I'm talking about SUPER FUN to shoot out in the field... I understand that I would probably lose about 2 fps per pound... But my objectives for building this SWEET rig is because I want it to have... #1- A draw that's SMOOTH as Butter #2- Capable of taking deer-sized game to a self-imposed 35/40 yd maximum #3- Be extremely pleasurable to shoot and practice with for extended periods of time I would like to be able to know this rig like the back-side of my hand and be totally proficient with it at said distances on game... My question(s)... Is a 50# draw weight very marginal for humane kills; in my very limited opinion I don't think so???... Based on my 29" DL and my 50# DW with a 33" ATA and my self-imposed KILL ZONE of 35-40 yard max range, and desiring to stick with a 100gr Fixed Broadhead what type of Carbon Arrow and weight in grains should I be considering and what size and type of fletching VANE should I be also considering in order to now TUNE this arrow to this rig??? I'm looking for opinions and recommendations here, as well as from the PRO SHOP that will be SUPERTUNING the bow... Being a newcomer to BOWHUNTING I'm just trying to get as much info as possible at this stage of the process from different sources, as always there's more than "one way to skin a cat".... Just want to make sure I'm shooting the arrow I need and that I think I would want! Could you elaborate and share some advice with a noob? Bowhunting and having this bow built to my specs HAS become an OBSESSION and an extreme PASSION since it started a week or two ago! It has consummed me and I am SUPER-STOKED! There is so much more to learn and that's the motive that propels me and excites me and fascinates me! Can someone throw more fuel on my fire! Talk about ENTHUSIASM...I'm driving my wife and kids NUTTTS Thanks and sorry for the lengthy post but I'm all NUTTS over this!

I shoot a 55# custom Take down recurve, its fast and smooth and i want to get a set of 50#limbs for field shooting and playing/Targets...One of the best shots i have ever seen was a Lady archer and she shot a 50#Compound,rarely mised, hope this helps, one way to look at it is anything is better than being overbowed and straining to make the shot...my state has a minium of 40lbs.its the razor sharp broadhead with a ..good double-lunger broadside shot ..that will bring home the most bacon, hope this helps what type broadhead are you going to use,i recommend the thunderhead or muzzy or snuffer, these have allways flown straight for me from anytype bow and very effective....the snuffer 125 and thunderhead 125 being my favorites...

one other tip that will help you morethan anything and i heard Dan Fitzgerald say this on one of his videos,is Practice,Practice,Practice, that way when the time comes you will go into auto drive and everything will come together like clock work, archery is as much a mental, super concentration sport as is the machanics and every bow built can out shoot any of us,i allways quit practice ona good note to build up confidance and if i over practice,i start geting tired and my groups open up,before i get to that point.. i quite after i warm up and iam what i call in the zone, when in the zone, all you concentratre on is becoming the arrow,my moto is to ...think arrow ,become the arrow,,,Byron Ferguson stress this ,watch some of his trick shots with a longbow on utube,he is truely one of the best archers ever and will amaze you with how accurate he is with his Longbow...Fred Bear & Howard Hill also were amazeing shots as well as the Late Paul Shaffer, there is a video clip on Trad Gang where paul shot a buck at 80 yrds.like it was nothing...He also took a cape buffalo with the recurve,I think he shot 80# i maybe wrong on that,Papa bear shot 70#,65# and 60# i thinkthe most, depending on what he was after,I saw his Favorite bow collection and his world record ram was hanging over it,The Ram was his favorite trophy,I think it was a stone sheep full curl,he also took a lion, tiger, and brown bear,Rare Glacier or Ice Blue bear, capebuffalo,Polar bear,Grizzly etc.and hunted the world with just his bow and arrow unreal trophy room and mueseum..try to find some of the old videos aand watch him & Howard Hill shoot...amazeing stuff... And good luck and have fun with your new bow

blackbearhunter, Thank you so very much for sharing your love of the sport with me! Your PASSION and ENTHUSIASM definitrly has put MORE fuel on the FIRE...I simply love it! And yes, practice, practice, practice and after that more practice and more practice... I want to be able to know this bow inside and out, yes, so it becomes automatic... Having this bow SUPERTUNED and with an arrow that matches leaves me the only weak link in the equation... So I too, will have to SUPERTUNE myself to become proficient and to know where my bow will shoot under a myriad of field conditions! And I'd like to mention at this point that I'm actually having two IDENTICAL bows built...One is for my HUNTING PARTNER, he's my 19 yr old son the PRIDE and JOY of my life... As rifle hunters we've been making dreams come true in the field and now we're getting into bowhunting because of its extreme challenges and we hope to make some more living memories in the field as a father and son team! There's a lot of hunting pressure in the areas we plan to hunt and bowhunting will be most difficult because of the terrain and because it is all spot and stalk, no stands allowed here, nor blinds... We expect to come home many times without even a shot, but plan and expect to have some wonderful quiet, and treasureable time in the field we'll share together! In our opinion it is the HUNT that makes it!!! And if and when we do get a shot however, that we take full advantage of our precision tuned gear and execute the shot without a flaw because of our command over the weapon and "THUP" it in the KILL ZONE.... Instead of brute strength and super-ego we will have to harness every bit of precision and finesse in order to execute that PERFECT ONE SHOT KILL with a SWEET SMOOOTH as BUTTER 50# compound bow that should be as smooth and fast and flat shooting enough for a clean kill at our intended distances... Thank you very much for sharing and we'll keep in touch my brother!

Yes,You got the plan figured out just right, your gonna be good in no time,I will share a tip a fellow archer with years under his belt told me one time,he said dont be afraid to take long shots and dont worry about loseing or breaking a arrow, its all part of the game,he said to shoot some long shots that way a close one will seem like a freebee..I have lost dozens of arrows and have a huge collection that are broken, need nocks, etc. and tons have been lost to the gods of archery accuracy and never found...so be sure and buy your arrows by the dozen and get ready to amaze yourself how good you will become, its liek riding a bicycle, once you learn, you never forget!Good Luck and i wish you many great adventures with your son and you guys have fun!Its all about the hunt, not the kill, the kill is just iceing on the cake, theres allways another day and time if you ever miss so keep at it and it will all come together,Bowhunting is a kings sport and is meant to give the animal a more sporting chance,I love it!! Its hunting in its truest Fairchase form..

I don't mean to put any of your fire out but I do believe that you are short changing yourself by having someone else "setup and tune" your bows. For the first time sure but after that it's something you should consider doing all of it yourself. It's kind of akin to having someone else sight in ones rifle. You would be well served to learn as much as possible about setup, tuning, making arrows, etc. Not only will you enjoy the sport more but you will find even more quality time with your son when your not actually shooting them!

You are not quenching my fire at all but quite the contrary! Yes, they are setting it up intially as you mentioned and after that its all me baby!!!! I will have to LEARN from them VIA email and learn how to work this puppy! So, yes you are VERY correct! They live in NY and I live in HAWAII... I will definitely have to learn every nook and cranny of this bow and be able to keep it tuned properly! And to be able to be cognizant when it actually is out of TUNE...hehehe If I know it like the back of my hand I should know the moment something is out of whack! I appreciate what your saying and the team I've assembled is prepared to teach me the art! So thank you for bringing it up and preparing me mentally as to what's ahead in the next few weeks ahead of me! I will learn because its all part of the PASSION... But remember every body had to learn including yourself...If you are improperly taught then it can take a lot of time wasted...and disappointments... I've been able by the grace of GOD to have gathered a couple of the best... I look forward to it and thanks again for your comments! Safe Hunting...
