Benefit Auction

Bart Schleyer Paul Schafer bow

This is a custom Marriah one-piece longbow made by Ric Anderson for Bart Schleyer. In September 2004, our friend Bart Schleyer was stalked and killed by a grizzly bear while on a solo moose hunt in Canada. Bart was a relatively unknown world class bowhunter but a true friend to many people. He was a trained professional biologist who dedicated his entire life to wildlife, specializing in capturing and radio collaring large bears and Siberian tigers worldwide. His career and life were documented in a recent article in Outdoor Life entitled "The Last Wild Man" in the February 2006 issue of that magazine. The recent highly acclaimed DVD "Primal Dreams" was dedicated to Bart. One of Bart's best friends was legendary bowhunter Paul Schafer. Just days before Paul's accidental death, he approached noted bowyer Ric Anderson of Marriah bows to order a special longbow to be custom made for his friend Bart as a gift. Paul Schafer's untimely death just days later made this one of Bart's priceless personal possessions. The Schleyer family has graciously donated this special bow to be auctioned off to the highest bidder with all proceeds from this benefit auction going to Bart's young son. This bow was used extensively by Bart and obviously has many stories that will never be told. It comes in a padded tubular case. It has been used but is in good condition. It can be displayed, used by its new owner as is, or refinished. The bow is 66" long, 91 lbs. at 28". On the riser is inscribed "Custom built for Bart Schleyer in memory of Paul Schafer." It is also a testament to the quality and durability of Ric Anderson's excellent Marriah longbows. This one is made with a shedua wood riser with limbs of red elm under clear glass and has moose antler tips. Purchasing this piece of archery history will not only be a good investment in bowhunting history but will also help Bart's son in so many ways. Thank you so much for your support. Make us all proud.

Respectfully,

Gene Wensel
