What are you shooting and how do you like it? I'd love to try a longbow, but one thing that concerns me is how you travel with one unless it is a takedown. Currently shooting a Martin T/D recurve.

I hunt with a modern reflex/deflex style longbow, ACS 53# it's a three piece take down and it travels very well indeed! Lots of guys will tell you that a reflex/deflex is just a simplified recurve and maybe they're right. I have a true English style longbow and don't like shooting it enough to hunt with. Almost any longbow modern or traditional can be built as a takedown.

A three piece has limbs that bolt to the central riser and the two piece models usually have a "sleeved" handle so the two parts fit together. My three piece will fit in my suitcase but a two piece is longer and needs seperate baggage.

It seems that the more classically designed longbows ie; the "D" shaped ones are more likely to be 2 piece takedowns.

Bill,

I shoot the same bow, ACS takedown longbow, as "calgarychef1". Mine is only 50#,
but works great on elk & deer (with a heavy arrow!).
It comes apart (takedown) easily into 3 pieces for traveling. It's a very quiet, fast &
accurate longbow

Traveling with a non takedown bow is definitely a bit of a hassle.

I started shooting a longbow about 4 years ago. Unfortunately, I suffered a shoulder injury 15 months ago and just recently was able to start shooting again.

I started with one of the Barta Bows. Thought it was wonderful, but it was, however, the first longbow I ever shot.

I've also added a Tomahawk Diamond to the arsenal and shoot it much, much better.

I truly enjoy archery again.

I shoot a custom built 68" 1 piece Scorpion longbow. This was one of the bows featured in Dan Bertalen's book "Traditional Bowyers of America".I bought a case for it from Black Widow but you can make one easy enough out of PVC tubing.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Dtala, nice bison, and with a stone point!
I'll have to google the ACS bows.

I have 2 Matlock reflex/deflex longbows and 1 other custom bow from a maker here in colorado. No matter how much I practice, I am not going to be able to feed myself with a longbow. I can robin hood an arrow at 20 yards, (twice) but trust me, it is just because the other arrow jumped out in front of the next one. My friend that was helping me just gave up on me. He does real well putting meat in his freezer with his but it hasn't worn off on me yet. I'm gonna have to stick to my Mathews.

I make my own, mostly out of Osage, never had a problem traveling with them.
