I hung my trail camera at a scrape and got pictures of 3 or 4 good bucks. Went there today and hung a tree stand nearby... didn't hunt, can't do that on Sunday here. Got the camera card out of the cam and came home and checked to see if there'd been any more bucks at the scrape. There was only 3 pictures, one blank, one turkey and a coyote. That coyote was walking there at 6:10 in the morning. I wanted to be at that stand about 6 at least, maybe 5:45. Now i don't think i'll go that early, i don't want to meet up with any coyotes in the dark. It wouldn't be that bad in daylight, but i dont' want any encounters when they can see me and i can't see them. Anyway, the buck pictures indicated the bucks were actually visiting the scrape during daylight hours, so daylight hours might be a better time to hunt that stand. Penny aim small, hit small

For what it's worth 'yoyes are more afraid of you then you are of them. They know your coming the minute you leave your truck. If you it will give you piece of mind get a can of bear spray. Better, get in that tree earily and get that 'yote. Good luck. If you can't smell his breath, your're not close enough!

Penny, Boss has it right. I do not know of a single attack on humans by coyotes. Normally a hunter has to work hard to even see one. They love our garbage and our pets, though. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!

Speaking of coyotes.....Was in my stand last night and the deer were coming in hot and heavy, I had a big doe at 10 yards broadside and a buck in the bush. At the same time another doe was coming across the field to my position. All of a sudden I hear a motor--"a motor I sez to myself??" Hmmmm all of a sudden this coyote comes high tailing it outta the bush, naturally I loosed an arrow somewhere in his direction. Then two bozos come into view on a quad, the guy on the back has a wheel bow over his shoulder. Obviously they were "hunting" but they scared everything away. Woulnd't have been so bad if it was a nice evening but I had absolutely frozen for two hours. I was truly hypothermic. I actually came pretty close to the coyote, I missed by a couple feet and he had the afterburners on so that part wasn't so bad, now I gotta go find the arrow. Funny I could see the arrow from my stand but not on the ground. damn quads the chef

I am a Border Patrol Agent, I have spent countless nights in the South West running around in the dark at night in canyons and deserts with coyotes around. I can honestly say based on several dozzen experiences that all they ever do is run away from you. The only time I have ever seen a coyote mess with a human was long after they were already dead. Get in there early and slay that dog with your bow.. HE IS EATING YOUR DEER!!!!!!!!!!!! NRA Life DRSS Searcy 470 NE The poster formerly known as Uglystick

They're big and numerous out here, but they don't mess with people. They will run up and kill a little dog on a leash right in front of you, though. ~~~ Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 1 Corinthians 16:13

I walked to my stand this morning in semidarkness. I believe you all, but i still felt better after getting up the tree. Will try to trap the coyote(s) later. No snaring, though. I tried that before and that's too hard would rather use a 220 conibear. I have a 160 conibear and have caught 1 coon, 1 possum and 1 ferel cat in a 5 gal bucket trap. Not sure if a coyote would stick its head in a bucket, but i'd sure like for one to try. Penny aim small, hit small

Our ranch where we hunt is full of coyotes--I shot 8 last year from my deer blinds. This year I've seen 4 in 3 trips, and sent one to coyote heaven, or wherever they go. It doesn't bother me one bit to walk to the blind in the dark, but when they start singing as I'm walking, it puts some urgency in my stride. The worst part of it is that the landowner told us he had seen a "big cat" crossing the road between the highway and his house. Few mountain lions in S. Texas, but I surely don't want to encounter one in the dark. And, for some reason, the thought of stalking the ranch roads at night with a red light shooting feral hogs is not appealing anymore. Plinker....don't ever be even a bit nervous about coyotes. Large dogs worry me a bit but never a coyote. They're sure nice to listen to on a lonely evening to boot. I had a kitchen helper working for me when I worked on an Indian reserve. He froze to death with his girlfriend while walking home from a party. The poor couple were in the snowbank for a couple days before their bodies were found....the coyotes found them first. Hmmm that's not a very uplifting post but it's true and a part of life I guess. Well I'm off to shoot me a doe if possible, hope I don't freeze like last time!!!!! the chef

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms. Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales. As do Coyotes. Grizz Indeed, no human being has yet lived under conditions which, considering the prevailing climates of the past, can be regarded as normal. Its the Bucks you have to worry about, not the 'yotes. I have had them bust from right beside me and luckily didn't get run me over in the process. But a Buck may want to protect his does from other males.
