Went out to Del Norte Gun Club here in Albuquerque yesterday to shoot some sporting clays but threw my bow in the truck since I have an elk hunt September 1st. The club just opened a new archery range complete with a walk through unknown distance 3-D course. This is what I ran into on the 1st station..........
Here it is in its natural "safe state" after my Browning 625 and Fiocchi Crusher in 7 1/2's barked.
It had no rattles. My dog was running under a big juniper tree 10 ft behind the shooting positon to find some shade like she always does. This giant rared up and HISSED like you wouldn't believe! My dog stopped dead in her tracks.
It had a FULL GROWN jackrabbit in it!

swampshooterThats an average size rattler down here in the Rio Grande Valley. I've seen 'em so big down here, you wouldn't believe me if I told you.

dustofferKilled one in dove season several years ago in S. Tx w/o rattles also. Did a bit of research and talked to a friend with PhD in wildlife disease. Discovered that sometimes when they den up in cold weather, that rats and mice sometimes help themselves to the rattles-just gnaw them away. Guess if they chew deeply enough, they don't grow back--but scary though.

L. David KeithLooks like a western Diamondback. Must have lost its rattlers to any number of snake predators. Would make some nice belts. Glad your pup wasn't struck.

jdollarhaving been bitten by one not much smaller than that in my garage, i can definitely say that it will ruin your whole day/ week/ month!!

carpetmanSnakeskins are easy to cure. Mix about a cup and half of 20 Mule Team Borax to a gallon of water and let soak three days. Rinse thoroughly. This will keep them from stinking. You can apply couple coats of glycerine. Tandy Leather sells a laquer call Neet Lac that is also good, it helps seal the scales---not totally necessary. To make hat band etc you have to applly (cement) the skin to backing leather. Darker backing brings out the pattern better.

carpetmanYou killed it why? It might bite you the next time. It might reproduce and one of it's offspring bites you. Possibly unintentionally it wont have that half a chance you mentioned.

Bill/OregonR: Not only good for hatbands but you could back a selfbow with an unspliced skin with a buzzer that big. I'd have zero issues killing a "silent" rattler along a frequently used archery course. I'd probably leave him alone if encountered out in the desert ...

jdollarkill 'em all and let God sort 'em out. i have killed 25-30 within 50 yards of my house every year for the past 6 years until this year( only got 3) i think i have FINALLY gotten the population under control.
