Just bought a new whiz bang fast Martin bow. An upgrade from my 10 year old Darton. I have a 5 pin sight (also new). It seems that one pin is good from 10-20 yards. The 25 yd. pin is good to 30 yds, (my maximum range distance). My question is: Shoud I have my pins overlap i.e 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 etc, or leave a gap 10-20 25-30 etc. What do you folks do? | ||

It's kind of a personal thing. When you draw on something is it easier to count down your pins 0-20 30 40 50 and then split the difference between yardages??? For me 0-20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80. (Now I am hoping to never have to use either the 70 or 80 but I got them just in case.) What are you going to feel comfortable with??? The other thing, if you zero an inch or two high for each pin, you will give yourself a couple of yards each way. If your bow is whiz bang fast just use one pin out to 35 yards and keep the confusion out of it. Just sight the pin in for 25 yards shoot it at 20 and 35 and learn how much to allow to be right on. It will surprise you how little you need to adjust. With my X Force I'm using one pin out to 40 yards. The pin is sighted in for 30 and it's only about 3inches high at twenty and four inches low at 40 yards. It's way better to have just the single sight out to 40 because at the last 3D shoot if the target was at thirty yards I would have three pins on the target and it was really distracting. Especially with the halo of fuzz around each pin due to my eyes starting to play games. The rest of my pins are set to 50, 60 70, and 80 yards. Take good care, Dave | |||

470, that's dangerous territory except for the most experienced archers. I have a pin for every 10 yards and just from the pin set up, I can see the shooting a flat trajectory, 32 yards is end of the arc for my arrows. They drop much more significantly at 35 and at 40 for a bow sighted in with one pin for 25, it can spell gut shot. I know some of you guys are very talented and never experience that problem, but I have to work for my accuracy constantly. I'm also lazy. Instead of guessing ranges, I use a rangefinder and then I know exactly where to put the target on or between the pins to hit that point. RETIRED Taxidermist | |||

Hi George With ten yard settings on my bow the pins are way to close together. As I mentioned with the twenty yard pin on a deer target lining up about a third or the way up the target my 40 yard pin is also on the chest area of the deer target. To gap the pins for twenty five or thirty five yards there is just a mess of pins and color on the target. With the top pin st for thirty yards I can fine tune the sight pin and pick a spot. My bow is shooting a 400 grain arrow at 310 fps. Dusky mentioned that his bow was very fast and I would really recommend trying the thirty yard setting. If he thinks he will have a problem he is more than welcome to go to ten yard settings. Take good care, Dave | |||

Dave, your bow IS smoking arrows. I had similar problems and decided to go to heavier arrows to keep the speed about 280. That gapped my pins more, but it really stunk up my longer shots as I was shooting bigger rainbows. I see where you're coming from. RETIRED Taxidermist | |||

Interesting info here, from a new bow hunter/shooter perspective. I went with a single pin sight because of my eyesight. I also plan to use a rangefinder, it is in my binos, so I plan to get the yardage and set my pin to the exact distance before I shoot. I know this would not work for some pop up and 3D tournments, but I think it will work OK for most hunting situations. As I get better I also plan to have a "primary zero" and be able to adjust my aiming point for those quick suprise situations. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY | |||

Hi george I'm the first one to pull out my range finder as well so I will know how to fine tune that first pin. My Scout range finder is 5 X so it can be used to look something over as well as finding out the range. I was shooting today and the difference of shooting 20 to 40 yards with the thirty pin was holding it between two inches low and three inches high. If I shoot forty yards with the 30 yard pin right on the arrow lands about six inches low but if I held six inches high with the thirty pin I would hit high by quite a bit and the 50 yard pin would only be about two inches under the bull. The draw weight is 70 lbs and the draw length is 30 inches. I had my winners choice cables and string twisted so I can get a full 70 lbs out of the bow now. Take good care, Dave | |||

As it turns out, my whiz bang fast bow (320 @70 lbs and 32 in) is not so fast in the configuration I shoot. I draw 29in, @ 60 lbs with arrows of 7.5 gr. per inch (PSE 200's) I shoot 100 gr muzzys with 4 in plastifletch. I don't really know the actual speed, but one pin is fine from 0 to 30 yds. Does anyone have a guesstimate of what speed I am shooting? Thanks | |||
