Went out the last week couple of times for pr. dog shooting with my bow, and noticed that we're starting to go up in the jackrabbit cycle-- so it seems. Late in the morning i started watching these jacks, and noticed that they would spook, and run aways, only to hole up again in the shade of the tall cholla cacti. So i scanned the cholla out in front of me aways with the binocs, and spotted several jacks holed up under them. I just waklked slowly up to them, and found that if i was careful enuf i could get within 20 yds. of them. I bet a guy could do pretty well on them with a bow, with a good pair of binocs-- when season starts, of course. Steve

Sounds like fun! Great stalking pratice too! We had a group of guys that get together the week before deer season to hunt TreeRats here in No, Ill. We get a little bet goingto see who can get the closest. If you can't smell his breath, your're not close enough!

I don't know the particulars but jacks sometimes are like cicadas. All of a sudden there are hundreds or thousands. Only lasts a year and goes away but what fun for 10 months! The only time I saw it personnally was Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX 1965. There was hole every 30 feet over thousands of acres. Astounding! "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I used to shoot them with a dime-store bow when I was a kid in West Texas. There was no season, but a 25 cent bounty for each pair of ears. Big money when I was getting a dime a week to mow the grass and take out the trash! They will use (and may prefer) regular prickly pear cactus as a shady haven as well. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!
