I watched a show on the OLN this weekend - I think it was called Water N' Woods - that had a video of one of the hosts (a female) bowhunting grizzlies (spot and stalk) in Alaska with a woman guide. Although women hunters are growing in numbers, I thought these two ladies were quite a unique pair. It's not too many men that would dare to bowhunt a grizzly on the ground, much less send their wife out to try it. I don't know what the guide was carrying as a backup, but I woulda made damn sure I was confident that the rifle was what I'd deem to be "enough" before letting my sweetie skip off into the woods for grizzlies with nothing but a damn bow and arrow. Anyway, the hostess missed at 57yds and the grizzly ran off. It was I'm sure a heart-thumping experience, and 57yds is pretty long for an accurate shot with your heart pounding. Just thought y'all would find that interesting.... TXpitdog P.S. - Even if she had hit it with a well-placed shot, would an arrow at 57yds have enough penetration to do the job? ...on earth as it is in Texas

TXpitdog I've always considered 40yards as the outside distance that I'll take a shot with either a compound or a recurve. Both of my hunting bows (compound & recurve) are 55# and I'm shooting a 33" XX78 with a 125grn Zwickey Eskimo. My arrows weigh around 565grns which is a nice heavy hunting arrow. Remember that mass is the same in an arrow as it is in a bullet. I would imagine that the woman was probably hunting with a compound around 55-60# and at a woman's draw length of 26"-27" her arrow was probably not more that 370grns. To begin with, she should never have take a 57yard shot. Her shot would have been marginal at 40yards with her equipment on a grizzly. She was an irresponsible hunter.

CaptJack, More or less quoting You : I've always considered 30yards as the outside distance that I'll take a shot with either a compound or a recurve. Both of my hunting bows (compound & recurve) are 65# and I'm shooting a 340 Easton with a 125grn Bear Razorhead. My arrows weigh around 600grns which is a nice heavy hunting arrow. I never ever tried to shoot beyond 30 yards. Beyond 22 yards I am feeling out of my depth. She was an irresponsible hunter. J B de Runz Be careful when blindly following the masses ... generally the "m" is silent
