What distances for sight pins?

I leave for RSA July 26. It will be my first time to Africa.
I have been practicing at 60yrds, and shooting about 95% at a five inch target.
I shoot a three pin sight, any suggestions as to what distances to set my pins for when I get there?

Thanks: Ted

I would do things the same way you do it in any hunting [Smile] . Take your Top at about 20 then middle 40 and bottom 60. I use a scope type sight and also use a three pin set and found the scope can be used as a sight for the closer and further shots [Big Grin] .

Help? I hope a bit.

I prefer a 1 pin sight that is adjustable, then you can shoot at differant yardages by just adjusting the site.I have mine set from 10 to 65 yards, works great with a range finder.

If your're hunting out of hides at water your PH should have you about 20yrds or less out. I took my Kudu at 15 and my wildebeest at 12. I also, made one heck of 28yrd. shoot on a jackel. I hunt with a recuve. If I was using a compound I believe I would just use two pins say 20 & 35. The fewer the pins the less chance of grabbing the wrong one.

In the thornveld it's not easy to find 40yrds. of unobstructed shooting lane. Besides the fun of bowhunting is being real close.

Leave the 60 yrd. shots for the double. [Wink]

Good luck on your hunt.

Depends on what kind of sight.....but in general I stick with 20, 30, 40, 50. Learn to split the pins for the in betweens.
I would recomend a good laser range finder. I assume you will be hunting from hides so you will have plenty of time studying your shot distances.
For stalks the PH can range them for you. I hope you can understand yours beter then I could mine on my last hunt. I had a gold metal Blesbock standing, qaurtering away. As I drew, my PH said fifty five yards......... I thought??? I set my 50 yard pin on his back and let loose..... I shot a foot over his back!! I asked, "how far"??? He said fourty five yards???? Live and learn.

My PH did tell me we would be hunting from hides, horse back and if we wanted to try some stalking. My neighbor has horses, so I will be practicing shooting from horse back. The PH said you can get pretty close to some of the game if you stay on the horse, but get off and they spook quickly.
I think from what everyone is saying I will set my pins for 20 30 40yds.
I am taking a back up bow and three sights, mabey I will set one of the sights for 30 40 50yds.
I would greatly appreciate any other suggestions anyone might have in preparing to go or things to keep in mind when I get there.
Yes I am taking a good laser range finder, wouldnt leave home without it.

Thanks: Ted

Ted, hunting off the back of a horse sounds fun!!
I would make one recomendation: Use a solidly made broad head. Everyone has thier favorite for thier own reasons, but when it comes down to shooting a big Kudu or Wildebeest, you best have a strong broad head.
I "HAD" been using the same broadhead for many years, taking several white tails, javelina, exsotics and even a nice black bear. This broad head has replaceable blades and shot thru every critter and preformed very well. After My trip to Africa, I will be using a different head. I took Impala, Blesbock, Wildebeest, Kudu, Bushbuck and ended up loosing a warthog. ( I think the warthog would not have been lost if my PH would not have insisted on going after it right after the shot). Every critter went down soon after the shot, but every broad head but one broke apart!
I will be looking hard at the two bladed, solid one piece style heads this summer. I like a cut on impact style.
(Ya, know, oh Fred Bear may have really known what he was talking about back in the 50"s!!)
Who and where will you be hunting with? Good luck and I will be waiting for the pictures and the stories!

I like even multiples, so I set my pins at 15, 30, and 45 yards. However, I am sure that I could live with 20, 30, and 40, too!

Happy Hunting, and have a great, safe Safari!

Bill, I like the idea of 15, 30, 45.
bo-n-aro, I will be hunting with Peter Harris, Ntshonalonga Safaris. We arrive in Joberg on July 26, and leave I believe on August 6.
Thanks to all for the advice. If anyone has more I am all ears.

Thanks: Ted

I would suggest, if you can, take "gadgets" that work on both bows. One arrow size for both bows is nice too.

I took my 70 & 60# recurves and carbon arrows. I use internal wt. & 145 & 185grn. broadheads so that I can adjust the arrows for either bow.

I also carried two duffels with a bow, arrows & tack in each. If one is misdirected, (Airlines don't loss luggage [Wink] ) I'm still hunting.

Best of luck on your trip.

I'd make sure his horses are used to having arrows shott off of them or you will be in for a wild ride once you let the arrow go! [Eek!]
