DEERING UP: As some 190,000 to 200,000 hunters gear up for the opening of Illinois' first firearm deer season, Friday through Sunday, rumors are flying. The biggest is Illinois Department of Natural Resources honchos expect a judge to throw out the cap of 15,000 on non-resident archery permits.

At least one big buck won't make firearm season. Tim Walmsley reports a typical buck taken in Hancock County by a California hunter last week was green-scored at a believable 196 inches. Buck racks are scored by adding and subtracting various measurements in inches.
