Yest we went up with the chainsaw and rake and sighted and cleared 25 feet in what should have been path of arrow. Nothing.

Today after we was finished hanging another deer stand my husband said lets look for your arrow some more. We parked the 4-wheeler down at the gut pile. (actually something ate everything but the stomach.) Backtracked on the trail, which i had already done. Husband said "look for something straight" and then he said "like this" and he held up the lower portion of the arrow with the broadhead. Then we walked up to where i'd shot the deer and came back down still looking for the upper third. That part was laying beside some bloody trees. So what must have happened is the deer ran about 40 yards and broke the arrow against a tree and the fletching portion dropped and another 10 foot or so the broadhead portion dropped. Now i can use the broadhead on another shaft. Also, while we were looking he found another arrow i'd shot and lost.

Then we decided to go look for an arrow he had lost a couple weeks ago. As soon as we got to the area, i said "well there it is in that tree." It was a 6" diameter tree and we had chainsaw along so we cut it out and saved the arrow. Pretty productive day, overall.

Maybe you guys can come and help look for that arrow I missed a buck with. It only bounced off of three trees or so. With your hubby's experience it shouldn't take too long, not counting the two hour hike up to where I shot of course! ;-)

A belated congrats on the first bow deer. I crumbled under pressure and shot a buck with the rifle last weekend... so I'm still a bow virgin. Still got mule deer (tough), black bear (hibernation) and elk (yeah, right, dream on)tags left... so you never know.

Frans,

If you stumble around in the woods long enough carrying a bow, you, too might get an elk!

Back from West Elk

If you read this post you will see that just about the only thing I did right was hit the woods.

Do not despair - I am living proof that even fat engineers that can't blow a bugle can stumble upon a dumb one once in a lifetime.

No thanks, Frans. Had enough of searching for arrows. Good luck in your quest of the mule deer and elk, though.

Don, that was a great story about your elk hunt. Should give people confidence to try calling. I seldom use any kind of calls afraid it will do more harm than good, but your experience is proof you don't have to do it perfect. It is still recognizeable to the animal, and they don't really reason and think.

Congratulations. It was a very good looking animal, and good pictures.
