I have been using Goldon Key Futura mini spinners (100 grain 3 blade) for years. These haven't been made in quite some time and I'm running low on replacment blades and parts.

So it time for a new head that I can get parts for. Requirments are 1 1/8" min diameter, 100 grain. Other than that I'm open to suggestions.

Has anybody tried the American Broadhead Comapany's Liberty line? (3 blade 100 grain)?
or
the Slick Trick (4 blade, 100 grain).

Uglystick,
Thanks for the reminder to try those. I tried them ten or more years ago and couldn't make them shoot worth a damn. But that was with a different setup entirly. I just dissmissed them out of hand for my current search but your reminder forced me to put a date on those "ancient" expirements. I'll have to see if I can dig some up from those tests; I'm a pack rat, there must be a box around here somewhere.

On another note I was poking around here at work and found two more fellows that recomend the Slick Tricks. I have also found a review site that must have had 15 reviews on the slick trick and they were all very positive.

IMHO the best broadhead is the Rocket Steelhead. With more than 70 deer kills, I've never had one fail. Never bent the body of the head. They shoot like field points. The blades are easily resharpened. They penetrate good enough that I have shot right through both shoulders several times. And did I say, they shoot just like field points? If your bow shoots very fast, a fixed blade head just won't shoot like a mechanical.

Google Rocket Broadheads and read all about them. You won't be sorry.

This is one area where I don't mind spending money on expensive heads but I keep going back to the muzzy or thunderhead. I've used them both since the late 80s. I cannot begin to tell you how many deer have fallen to these from my brother and me. They just work, and they're cheap by today's standards. I've been paying $15 for 6 at Meijer ever year once the season is over. Got a safe full of them.

P S Morgan, I have this leeryness about the mechanicals. Its realy quite commical, I shoot a Mathews Zmax at around 285FPS with Graphite arrows, fall away rest, pins with lazer back up and I can't quite get my head around mechanical broadheads. killpc I have abandoned my primative roots and gone full tech, all except that little pointy thing on the end the does the killing. I've picked them up at the store got them to the check-out and just can't seal the deal.
70+ kills with mechanical heads is a damned hard number to argue against. Are you using the Rocket 100XP (cut on contact) or the standard ground pentator tip?
The other cut on contact mechanical (hybrid) that I have looked at is the G5 TekenII. DO you have any expirence with these?

Rusty, I'm like Doc, I've shot a load of Thunderheads, and always good performance. When I went wholesale to carbon arrows I tried the Innerloc broadheads, and they have been awesome, dependable and reasonably priced. They're worth a try. Very stable even at ridiculous speeds out of my 3-D rig--295 fps+.....

Slicktricks are great if you can get them. Muzzy 3 blade 100 are a great head. The new MX4 muzzy looks like it should fly well.

I verified the bow set up and I get bullet holes at 8 and 15 yards feet, so I'm confident the bow is set up properly.

I tried 100 and 125 grain Thunder heads along with the 100 grain Rocket Steelheads this weekend. The thunder heads don't fly or group well. The Rocket's fly great and shoot directly to the sights, but I'm getting unreliable opening in the foam target. Even with a double thickness of tablet backing in front of the foam. The blades are stright and free swinging and I'm using the factory rubber bands.
I'm afraid I'd just be shooting deer with the equivilant of an FMJ.

I'll try the Muzzy 3 blade this week.

Anybody got a spare Slick Trick 100 magnum they wouln't mind sending me for testing? I'll send it back SHARP.

Slick tricks are pretty cheap so i would just buy em and try them. I used to use mechanicals until i had two failures, slick tricks shoot to same point of aim as field points, at lest in my bow.

I shot a crossbow out of necessity. Since the bolts are shorter than arrows they tend to plane if the BH is too big. Have tried a number of BH designs to determine which ones don't and which shoot to the same point of impact as my field arrows. Without a doubt, the Slick Tricks are the most consistanly accurate. 4 blades, Alcatraz lock, available in 100 and 125 gr, and 1 or 1&1/8" diameter. Have a look on their site.

The local shop is out of slick tricks till sometime this week, probably Wed.
I tried The new muzzy MX-4. They shoot OK out to 30 yards; they'll hold a 6" circle around the aiming piont. Not great but that'll kill a deer.
I'll try the slick tricks when I can get a chance; still looking for something that hits where the pin is.

I've never seen any type of Mechanical fail to open on game. Most of the latest models are pretty dependable in the opening category but, penetration is where it gets hairy. There are just a handful of mechanicals that will penetrate like fixed heads.

Good Luck

Borrowed a Slick Trick 100 magnum from a shooter at work. Its one of his practice heads so it was dull as a hoe for my shooting test.

HOLY SHIT! I found my new broadhead!

Dead nuts accurate out to 40 yards, didn't get a chance to walk back any further. They out penetrate the MX4's by 3" in the foam target, (while dull), fly awsome and resharpen like a dream. A few passes on the diamond stone and its ready for open heart surgry.

Now the trick is going to be finding some so I can shoot them at deer. Maybe he'll let me keep this one for a couple of months.

How are you sharpening Steelheads?

I agree, they are the best flying broadhead I've tried. I've killed deer with Muzzy, Spitfire, thunderheads, and rocket steelheads. The Steelheads fly the best and give great penetration, I've never had one not exit. I just don't think they come very sharp. NAP seems to have the sharpest blades I've tried (Thunderheads and Spitfires.)

P.Morgan.I think the steel head is a good broadhead and I have hunted with them..Do not see too many people shooting them. I did have two of the blades break off on a Buffalo that I shot a few years ago.

The Steelheads are great shooters and killers. The blades are very sharp, they are supposed to be from commercial slaughter house blade design"bacon skinner"with a very wide grind.

I switched to Slick Tricks at the beginning of 06 season and they are by far the best flying fixed head out there. I took a doe on my Illinois lease last week at 43 yards and hit the mark perfectly. Ive never had a head fly like these do. I shoot the 100 mag.

To sharpen a steelhead blade:
Remove the blade and grasp with a small pair of vis-grips and just do like a knife on a stone.

Also, just wanted to tell about trying the Tekken broadheads.... two does at about 20 yards perfectly broadside.... shot them both right through the shoulders. I don't think the arrow slowed down a bit and I saw them both hit the ground.

Impressive kills with excellent arrow flight, however after buying them and seeing how they are, I did some research and decided that they are probably illegal because they are barbed.

Hope everybody had a good year.... I've got to waite 8 months before I get to hunt here in KY again.
