Safari12-On this and other forums it has been widly reported that bowhunting in Tanzania is illegal. In Zim it is by "specail permit", the aquisition of which is questionable. Could you please shed any light on the current situation? Thanks.

Ann,
My bow experience is limited, but I have gone through the agony of dislocating shoulders (motor bikes) and consequent surgery, rehab and eventually bow hunting.
I agree with Boss K and strongly recommend that you train with weights in the gym. As ex long-distance runner, canoeist, cyclist, swimmer until a decade ago, I am certainly no muscle giant, but strong enough to bench press, squat and dead-lift my body weight of 195 pd. I train hard about 5 times a week and include specific bow-related exercises in my routines. There are several bow-specific exercises that can be done, but you need to do an overall workout for a balance in strength. There is no doubt in my mind that this helps me prevent shoulder injuries. I am very comfortable with my 70 pd Hoyt Viper II, can pull my friend's 80 pounder with some extra effort and have once pulled a 100 pd bow under male ego stress conditions (alternatively dubbed "peer pressure") at the campfire.
Weight training also safeguards you against other irritating small injuries when doing the normal outdoor jerks like getting on and off vehicles, picking up dead animals, climbing mountains and the likes. At my age (56) you don't get stronger any more, but at least you maintain condition, plus it is great fun to train till you drop!
My 2c.
Lochi.
Ps. Wishing you a most enjoyable buff hunt!

a 65 lb bow will do the job! Get you some heavy arrows 500 to 540 grain with maybe a 140 grain Montec G5 broadhead. I read a n article also. They were using 70lb draw weight and the arrows were filled with liquid to give them more mass. They were hunting elephant and would lay down on the ground and shoot up into their vitals. Gotta be some crazy people!
