I was one of those little tykes in the 50s when I started shooting. I had a big advantage- my uncle was the rep for Bear & Wing for the west coast(H.B.Krohn) and my cousin, Doug(his son) was the shop manager at Easton. I don't have a single bow I paid for and not many arrows I was a serious competitive NFAA Freestyle Limited shooter from the late 50s-81 when I retired from competition. All my hunting bows have always been recurves- mostly Bears with one Wing through the years- many animals... Today I hunt with a Palmer TD- 55#@31" and a 1981 Quadraflex fingers compound set up at 55/28# @32" that was a gift (the only hunting compound I've ever had) I shoot uncut 2117 Easton XX78s with 125grn.Zwickey Eskimos in either of the bows (I'm 6'5")- they both love them just the same. As said above- it's easier to shoot the compound out of my ground blind and in some cases my tree seats but I prefer to hunt with my Palmer TD. (Mike Palmer and I grew up together in archery- little kids hangin' out at Bob Lee's Wing Archery in Bellaire,TX) The way I've always looked at it is- I never take a hunting shot past 40yds and would prefer not to take one over 30yds regardless whether I'm using my compound or my recurve. I almost always have pass through with both bows so what difference does it make. As a competitive shooter for over twenty years- I stood outside almost every night and shot my 100 practice arrows (like piano lessons so I don't miss- I've been so focused on the spot for sooo loong.... The bow in the pic below was my Wing prototype compound- just before they were released to the public in 1975. pic is from the 1975 Texas State Championships. | ||
