I bought my Son a Primos hardwood grunter, are they any good? any tips on using it would be appreciated. We are both rookies when it comes to deer calls. This call has an adjustable reed.

I have used a grunt tube successfully on several occasions, due to the fact that the bucks were in full rut and were in no frame of mind to accept an interloper. Full rut usually coincides with our muzzle-loading season. During our black powder season one buck came in so quickly, had his ears laid back and was bristled up to the point that I almost forgot to shoot.
I think the key to using a grunt tube is not to over do it. Call sparingly.
Also watch your backside. Many bucks will circle on the fringe trying to get a glimpse of the action. Good luck.

Alot of time less is more when it comes to grunt calls. like stated above use it wisely and at the right times. Also you need to decide what type of animal you want to call in with you grunt. Usually during pre rut or rut using a deep mature grunt will scare away most smaller immature bucks so if you looking to take any buck use a younger buck grunt. Also try the doe bleat mark on the call when you see bucks seeking and chasing and again after the main breeding has ended and buck are still searching for receptivee does.

What is weird about using a grunt call around here is that early in the bow season does will run in fast with a buck in tow to investigate. Now that the rut is getting going, nothing responds. I have tried a light grunt on visible bucks and they don't even look my way. There are times when it draws in many deer and then all of a sudden none will come to it.
I had some fun with a doe one year when I was calling fox. I didn't see any fox so I just blew into the call so it sounded like a baby squalling. This doe leaped the fence and ran up to me looking all around. When she turned to leave, I screamed again and she came back. I did this to her for 40 minutes. Lots of fun.
