After working on cars all week in the rain I finally got out to hunt. I shot a large doe. She only went 20 yd's before crashing. I spent today cutting her up. The weather was perfect for hanging one and I wanted to hang her longer but my daughter has a rotten roof on her house. Looks like I have to help her. Why does everything go bad in hunting season?

Congrats on the doe. I hope to get a fat one soon! A Norwegian once told me that the formula for hanging meat was that the integral of days times temperature should be 40. But that was Centigrade - and that's a bit ripe for American taste. I use "(Degrees F above freezing) times (days) = 60" This means 10 days at 38 F, 7 days at 40 F, etc. I measure the temperature at the ball-socket on the hind leg (the thickest part). I try to get the carcase chilled to that depth as quickly as possible. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!

Good job BRFshooter. I guess the rut ought to be kicking in here, soon. Bummer about the chores...hope you have good weather for the roof. Our first big frost here, this morning. Don, sounds like you're precise in hanging your meat. We pretty much just do the 3 day, or whenever it's convenient rule. Long as the weather's cool. Plinker aim small, hit small

It's been in the 60's and 70's every day here. IMHO too warm for bow hunting. I've been out a couple of times, but by the time I get situated, I'm covered with sweat. JD

Good show! Nice to have meat for the freezer. 10-4 on the "why does it happen during hunting season?" Last year I had to fix the roof on my barn ... cost me a good week. This year my youngest son has made it home for almost the entire bow season. He's not cooperating by keeping it down after 4 pm ... and the deer are staying WAY back in the woods as a result. Love the kid (he's not really a kid) and would feel terrible if he didn't stay with us, but ... Herds are not forming up at all yet. Last night's hard freeze may help. We'll see. I spent all day on the roof. When I seen the job I almost left. Had to tear off all the sheathing on one side and replace it. The jack rafters also had to come off and I have to put them back tommorrow and sheath over them. I broke off the chimney to below the roof because it goes nowhere and is not used. It was a big source of the leaks. This will amount to half the roof being done, but my daughter can finish from that point. She is going to put up steel roofing. Maybe by Monday I can hunt some more if the aches and pains go away. My knees are killing me.

I got a 4-1/2 year old doe Sunday evening. 25 yards broadside - ribcage all the way. No sign of string jumping, but I caught her with her mouth full of acorns! One thing that gave me pause was that her paunch was completely packed with nuts and nut hulls. I could not tell if any were walnuts, but she definitely had been eating acorns and hickory nuts. That paunch was so heavy, full and dense that I doubt even my 900 grain arrow would reliably penetrate it. Just goes to emphasize that quartering away shots from the deer's left should be approached with caution. That paunch was so big she looked ready to give birth! Sheer glutteny! My doe had fat over an inch thick on her. I got out tonight and watched a buck walking after a bunch of does. They just kept running away. The ground is all torn up with scrapes. I never had a shot but had a lot of fun. Have to go back on the roof tomorrow. This house is so crooked my daughter can't even put on a piece of sheathing by herself. She was told the guy that built it was so drunk, he rolled off the roof and layed in the front yard all day.

Yep, mine too. They are in fine shape for winter here. I have seen two batehlor bucks, saw my first faint scrapes this past weekend. No rubs actually on the property I hunt. Don_G ...from Texas, by way of Mason, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado!

Good shooting, Don! I never would have thought that deer would eat hickory nuts, they are so hard. Have been noticing the hickory nuts have been disappearing though, and i didn't think it was the squirrels. BRF, that's good to hear your doe had an inch of fat. I hate to see them go into winter with no fat to fall back on. The extra protein and nurishment might be of help for improved racks on next years bucks. Hope so. Plinker aim small, hit small

You're too sober to fix that roof, then. You might have to force yourself to have a few drinks just to get things to line up. Don't fall though. Plinker aim small, hit small

I had to have 3 beers to get more sheathing on. We need 5 more sheets to finish. Kim put a lot of tar paper on what we did so far because it was supposed to rain a little. The last of the roof is mostly overhang for her porch and the rafters need scabbed up because they sag so much there is a big low spot there. Then we still have to shingle it. I ordered a roofing nail gun and nails from Harbor freight which should make it easier. I have to move my stand tomorrow. Seen a lot of deer crossing a brushy area. Most of the deer I see from my stand come from there too. I shot a practice shot when almost dark, drew the bow a little off position and got a sharp pain on the very top of my shoulder where the little bone sticks up. I hit the leaf though. Have to see if I can draw the bow tomorrow, might have to rest for a while. I blame the roofing work!

LOL. Hey, if you ever get down to the Charleston area, they have a big Harbor Freight Store. Pretty neat. That's great if you can hit a leaf. Bad way to lose them though. I lost two arrows yesterday practicing. Took spray paint and painted the green fletchings red. I'm down to three arrows. Went to buy more, but the sportings good store is out, had to order. They're out of a lot of stuff now in the peak of archery season. Well i don't even see how you have energy to go hunting after doing roofing work. That's backbreaking! Hope the weather holds.
