Hell, Canuck, if you really knew how fast I'm falling apart you'd never have planned a TZ hunt with me! cheers

I did not get serious about a heavy bow until AFTER that surgery.

Dear Don,

Thanks for Your concern. I am complaining about the recurves because they are that light ( about 1#) that all the shock is hitting either Your elbow or Your shoulder. It’s my case. As far as I just snap shoot less than 50 arrows, it’s all right. More will harm my left elbow and then my left shoulder. Too much oomph in too light a bow.
It’s my main chief trouble but I know the cause. Concerning the f…ing virus I got in the CAR, I have to get along. As You know I am involved in medicine and I collected many informations from the best of our rheumatologists, the kind who are curing the most prominent sportmen (especially football players) in the world. A viral disease isn’t easily curable. I have to be patient. Period. But count on me that if I suffer from bow handling I’ll ruin your life as long as I haven’t got the address of the best rheumatologist You can indicate me.
I am very amazed that a Mathews could be less smooth than a Bowtech. Anyhow 100# is really not at anybody’s reach. I wish You can upgrade your fitness up to this grade. As far as one can progressively practise every day, I think one can reach stunning results.
Concerning buff hunting I can’t imagine shooting beyond 30 yards. In fact I had the opportunity with a “dagga†boy and spoiled it because I had decreeted to shoot under 30 yards.
Are You affirmative that a 900grains could be deadly at about 50 or 60 yards?

Quote : “I don't know how long it will take me to get to 90#. I now wish I had bought the 90# Allegiance instead of the 80#.â€
That’s make me feel ashamed. I fact You was a pioneer and I took advantage of Your disappointment to choose my best picking, a 90# allegiance ; thanks again. I wish I could help You and that we could share this bow, but You aren’t exactly next door.

Now my head is full of Zimbabwe with Myles McCallum : 3 weeks in 2 or 3 places with the bow and the rifle. It’s the only way to force me to practise with the bow and walk and jog.
Good luck

Jean,

I think that a 900 grain arrow from a modern 90# bow will reliably kill a Cape Buffalo at 50-60 yards, if you can place the arrow properly. Jumping the string will not be an issue. The very curved trajectory will be the problem!

When I went to TZ in September I was expecting not to shoot at anything over 30 yards, with an absolute maximum of 35 yards. As it turned out this meant that I never took a shot with the bow.

Several times I was within 15 yards of several buffalo, but never got that close to a good bull when I could see to shoot.

I don't think that I actually had any opportunities between 30-60 yards, either, but my PH said that I should be ready for a 50 yard shot if I ever came back. These were all spot-and-stalk hunts, not waiting in a blind.

I figure I can sit in a blind here at home - I'm not going to spend thousands of dollars to do it in Tanzania!

Bonne chance, mon ami,

We might have been able to get a 50 yd shot on the bull I shot on Day 5 in LU5. Alan REALLY wanted to get into bow range on that group of dagga boys but when he came over that rise and they were 40 yards away, he made the judgement call that it would be too far for the bow (he didn' think we'd ever get within 30 yards the way they were moving) but too good an opportunity to pass up, and so he told me to get ready with the rifle. I think I shot it at about 70 yds (?) after it had fed away about 20 yards or so. We might have gotten closer if we tried one more ridge but I think Alan was thinking "a bird in the hand, etc" and we could spend the remaining 5 days looking for less mobile dagga boys for you to arrow. Anyway, my point is that if we were only bowhunting at that point, I think Alan might have been able to get us to within 40 or 50 yards.

Also, I am not sure if you saw it or not, but when you were hidden behind the bush in the korongo and I was about to get stepped on by the elephants, there was a bull feeding on the opposite side of the korongo from you. How far do you think that was? I was thinking about 60, but I could be way off (my mind was on not getting trampled at that moment). It might have been even 80 or so. (side note: was that one of the coolest things ever or what? Big Grin )

Cheers
Chris

Yeah, both Alan and I saw a bull over there. He was probably 60-70 yards from my position at his closest point, but there was never a shot opportunity on him (even at that range.) He was always quartering too much or behind the cows.

Yep, that incident has to be the coolest few minutes of my normally boring life!

I still have my High country machined supreme as well. I haven';t shot it much, I took it to Namibia as one of our backup bows and it is set at 80lbs and I have no doubt it would be up to the challenge. I mainly use a Mathews Switchback set at 70lbs, shoot a Muzzy 125gn 3 blade on carbon express 350's. I went 10 for 10 on plains game in August with it so it is hard for me not to pick the Mathews up when heading to the field. There is a lot of great equipment out there, new and old,,practice and get lucky!

Bowtech Samson (custom)
130 pound draw
Its a bear to shoot at 130. I backed it down to 105 after talking to Bowtech. With 29.5 FMJ's and 100gr heads it'll sling one 356 on my chrony. A little under spine but Bowtech (thinks) she will hold with these arrows.
They made it for a local retailer (Marks Outdoors) after he sold a bunch of Bowtechs. They used it in the store for a man-tivity checker for a year or so. Sold it to me as new in October of this year. I called and they put me intouch wih the rep who had it built. He said it has 120 on the sticker but the shop did it a little better. Its not so bad if you can pull it back and shoot it but if you draw and then dont try a shot it feels like your spine is popping out when you let it down. I dont know how fast it is locked down but its got to be close to 400fps.
Even at 105 its very quiet and feels and shoots solid, I just dont know if I can pull er back on a cold morn after 2 or 3 hours in a tree stand. Its just a yard bow for now.

Mark's is a great place to buy stuff like that. I've been buying stuff there since 1983.

In fact Mark's is where I got my Bowtech Extreme Solo.

What I have now:

- Great Northern "Jack Knife" Critter Gitter longbow.
- Bob Lee Signature recurve.
- Martin Hunter recurve.
- Bear something or other recurve (very old).
- Osage orange self-bow made from a stave taken out of a tree felled by a friend.
- Hickory self bow made from a stave taken from a tree I felled.

- Numerous other long bows and recurves that have come and gone.

I shot my first trophy whitetail at age twelve using an old longbow and therefore been hooked on basic archery tackle ever since. Had one compound but it just didn't feel right to me so I let her go. I have a friend whose inlaw is a pro for Mathews so that's what he uses. Very impressive bow. I think if my shoulder ever gives out, I'll get one of those.
