I have a question for you guys who ring out the best performance from you're trad bows.
I have my old Wing Archery 70 pound Redwing pro recurve. I bought some gold tip 75-95 traditional shafts.
I used a test kit of field points and got best arrow flight with a 165 gr. point.
I then added 40 gr. weight on the backside of the insert and a 125 gr field point on the front.
The arrows fly straight but I get an occasional shot that doesn't.

What am I missing. The shafts are cut at 29" and I'm using 5" parabolic feathers.

I'm testing at 10 yards is it possible that the arrows are only just getting stable at that range and some of them hit before it's stable?

What do you guys think?

First number your arrows.

10 yards is too close.
Then set your target at 20 or 25 yards.

You will probably find that some arrows shoot good, some not so good...

Use the good arrows for hunting, always carry one of the not so good ones for a point blank finisher...

I like that idea. I didnt mention that even though the one arrow shown striking the bag badly the next time I shot it it hit the bag square. I think like you say backing up a bit will help but I would like this bow shooting good up close because I would like to get close to game when I can.
My compound bows have no trouble shooting straight at 10 ysrds but they're a lot less hard on the spine of the arrow. Especially with tbe draw weight of this 70 pound beast.
I will number the arrows. I can't belive I've been shooting these things this long and haven't come up with that on my own but you are my guru Mr T.

Many many years I used to shoot a straight bow and wood arrows. It does take a while for them to settle down.

Also you might think about getting a couple of stouter shaft arrows for shooting big things up close as they would have less flex/whip to them at the time of impact and hit more point on and penetrate deeper.

There can be 3 reasons for this.
1. You don't have the correct arrow spine.
2. Your need to work on your release.
3. You are torquing your bow.

10 yards is far enough to stabilize with a trad bow when you use 5" feathers.

This is a very good read about bow tuning. Long, but covers all the details for conventional bows as well as compounds... finger release as well as mechanicals.

Thanks guys I've been off the computer for a couple of days.
Looks like the arrow testing will be on hold for awhile though.
We had a little snow over the weekend and I'm finding the cars and my truck alright but I haven't found my arrow target bag yet.

I've been going through this for the last few days so a big thanks for the link.

I'm getting my arrows kicking out to the right as I release, and when they strike the target they are all tip up even though I am shooting slightly downwards.

I'm sure I have some work to do...
