Anyone here shoot this discipline or know someone who does? A friend of mine is all fired up after watching the Olympics and wants to get started (he is a Bullseye pistol shooter). It is very difficult to get information! My club has noone who shoots this. Plenty of 3D shooters! The other club in Jax also has noone!

Well, I had no responses so let me close the loop here. It turns out that one of the US FITA training sites is not far from Jacksonville, in Newberry Fl, not far from Gainesville. My friend found out about it and arranged a private lesson with one of the coaches there. He has since had another lesson. Also, at about the same time another member of the club decided to get into FITA archery, so now he has some company. Of course, neither is an expert, but hopefully they can encourage each other.
In a similar vein, one of the members of my club made the US Para Olympic team, and made it to the final 12 medal round. he did not medal, but still an incredible achievement. This site in Newberry FL, also holds regular matches for para olympic archers. In fact they had one just a couple of weekends ago. Our club has a range up to 90 meters.

Peter, anyone regularly taking on a bullseye at 70 meters with a recurve target bow has all the admiration I am capable of. I think it's a very demanding sport, plus you might bump into Geena Davis ...

Cool

Not with an arrow nocked I hope! The para olympic guys use a compound bow. The guy from our club holds the string in his teeth! There are two guys who shoot in the para FITA events. They practice for hours by themselves. No one else shoots at those ranges! My max with a compound is 50 yards.

Most compound shooters are supprised by the accuracy a recurve is capable of, but a Olimpic Recurve is a very stable bow to hold and shoot. Back when I first began in archery, before the advent of compounds in the mid 60's, most clubs were NFAA clubs. National Field Archery Association. We all shot field rounds, 28 targets ranging from 7 yds to 80 yds, 4 arrow per target, 112 arrows per round, at least once a month to maintain your classification. What is supprising is the accuracy atainable by walking the string of a recurve. Thats a system of holding the string at differnt points to keep the point of your arrow on target, which can be as accurate as a sight.

skin that one out, and I'll get ya another

I shot a lot of field round tournaments with recurve in the 60's and 70's. Went to compounds about 5yrs after they came out and am back with recurves again for the past 3yrs.

It amuses me when people talk of 25 and 30yds being long shots with what is called traditional equipment today.
