Well tonight I was in my new spot and it was so damned windy I almost went home....but I decided I'm here I might as well tough it out. Then in walks this deer....tines so long I thought it was a mulie, the main beams I couldn't have gotten my hand around. He stood behind my decoy and S**t if he's not able to see me draw...I should have had the decoy about 10 feet further back. So I just got to watch him slowly saunter by and go on with his business. He was grunting all the way.

Oh well at least I didn't spook him

I love and hate close encounters like that.

Sounds like you have a good spot there. Did you try grunting back? Although if it was grunting all the way it was probably a tending grunt, so it was might have been hot on trail of a doe. I never heard a deer grunt, only read about it.

When he went away I did use a doe bleat, that didn't work so I tried an estrous bleat which stopped him in his tracks. He obviously had had enough of the decoy as it wasn't the "girl he thought she was" and he kept on his way. I think deer vocalize more or less depending on the area of the country. In the bush here they talk a lot, but on the prairies I think they talk less. Also on the prairies I think they use their eyesight more than their noses. Around here we can fool their eyes a lot easier.
