Red or Black Recoil Pads...........
I finally got a little time in at the shop and put on a couple recoil pads.
One is a 458 Lott Ruger RSM, and the other is a Dakota 97 in 9,3x62. Which Pad color do you like better?

I wish that the Pacmayr Decellarator red was more pure red, it looks a little orange to me but I still think I prefer it to the plain black. The picture makes it look like I need to clean the dust out of the edges too. I'm thinking that the 9,3x62 needs a red pad and some iron sites to make it look more "African". It's already killed over 20 head of African game, though unfortunately not by me! What do you think?...............DJ

DJ; I like a black pad with an ebony tip ( that top one is my idea of a perfect shape FE tip) and a red pad with no FE tip.

I'm a big fan of solid red pads with a black base.

DJ For me it depends on the wood-darker wood looks good with a red pad, lighter with black. On those rifles I'd go with black. Just looks better to my eye.

I like red. Tony Galazan at Conn.Shotgun Mfg has a good one that's called "The Period Correct" buttpad that looks good and absorbs a bit of recoil too.

I like red pads on wood stocked rifles. ANd I prefer red headed women. And When i buy a car (as oppposed to a truck), it is always red. And my underwear, well, never mind

on wins, mausers and CZ and such I seem to like red.........or as my Buddy Jeffe refers to...........Tiddy pink, but on Wbys and others I like Black. But its a hard call they both look nice, its just depends on what the world looks like when I wake up.

An old gunsmith friend told me that he always matched the pad to the tip, if present. Ebony tip/black pad, Rosewood tip/brown pad. No tip, brown pad, and classics, red pad. I am pretty fond of the traditional English style red pad, but I am a fan of classically stocked rifles and splinter forearm/straight gripped double shotguns.

I think that they are both in good taste. Oh! & the brown also. Wink

As Patten said about pearl grips in pistols I believe the same applies to those god aweful white line spacers on recoil pads! Big Grin

The color must be a matter of the "look" a particular stock has with the color of the pad. Both of those rifles look good to me in that respect.

Most used to be red or brown in the past and I never liked brown pads. Now that Kimbers come with black pads I have got used to that color.

To each his own.

My vote is for the pad that reduces the recoil the most ,if the same Brown.

On a plain Jane walnut, with not much if any figure, black or brown.

On a fancy grained piece of wood, red.

On plastic, plain black.

Unless I change my mind. Big Grin

When they make a "red" pad I'll get interested. Until then the pink and orange ones don't do much for me.

My favorite red pad is Pachmayr's 1" medium 'Decelerator', which I have on my 338 Win. Mag. This is a beautifully-made pad that finishes out very smoothly, and it's much more effective than some of those brick-hard red pads Galazan offers.
