Another Twist To Testing 22 Ammo

I have a couple of jars of a bullet lube called SPL, supplied by the Woodchuck Den.

I thought I will try it in our testing, and see what the results are.

I took two boxes of Eley high velocity - the one with the rabbit on the box, the same lot number.

I left one box as is. And the other one I cleaned all the lube off the bullets using a rag and Hoppe's #9. I dried them. Then I heated a 50/50 mixture of SPL with water - as suggested by Todd Kindler of the Woodchuck Den.

I dipped the cleaned bullets into this mixture, and left them to dry over night.

This afternoon, I cleaned the rifle barrel throughly, then fired 5 rounds with factory lube.

After this I fired 10, 5-shot groups.

I cleaned the barrel throughly again. Fired 5 shots with ammo which had the lube cleaned off, and lubed in SPL.

I then fired 10, 5-shot groups using the ammo I coated yesterday with SPL.

I remember an arti8cle published in Precision Shooting - I think - years ago. That suggested blowing compressed air into the barrel after each shot improves the accuracy.

So I though we will do this as well.

The barrel was cleaned, then I fired 5 shots through it.

I used a compressed air tank, and blew a squirt through the barrel after each shot. Shooting 5, 5-shot groups.

I have not measured the targets yet, but will do so tomorrow, and let you know what the results are.

If any of you has any suggestions on what to do next, please let me know.

Here are our results.

Eley high velocity ammo, factory lube, at 50 yards with a Walther KK 200 match rifle.

1. 0.261
2. 0.660
3. 0.467
4. 0.158
5. 0.355
6. 0.326
7. 0.653
8. 0.354
9. 0.356
10. 0.426

Average for the above is 0.401

We cleane the lube off 50 rounds, and lubed them with SPL, and left them over night.

1. 0.572
2. 0.250
3. 0.306
4. 0.695
5. 0.283
6. 0.470
7. 0.659
8. 0.276
9. 0.316
10. 0.066

Average for the above is 0.389.

We then cleaned off the barrel, fired 5 shots of the same ammo, then blew compressed air through the barrel.

We fired the following groups, using the same factory ammo as above, blowing compressed air after each shot.

1. 0.644
2. 0.297
3. 0.391
4. 0.305
5. 0.294

Average for the above is 0.406.

I think all these variations might be due to thne normal performance of the ammo.

But, as we got a 15% improvement with SPL, my plan is to try this lube with the 10 best ammo we find shooting in this rifle.

I will let you know how it all goes.
