Trump's Son Gets Permit Allowing Him to Hunt Alaska Grizzly Bear

Trump's Son Gets Permit Allowing Him to Hunt Alaska Grizzly Bear

BY YERETH ROSEN

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Donald Trump Jr. has been granted the right to hunt a grizzly bear in northwestern Alaska near the Bering Sea town of Nome, a state official said on Friday.

The son of U.S. President Donald Trump was one of three people who applied for 27 spots for non-resident hunters targeting grizzlies in a designated region of northwestern Alaska's Seward Peninsula, said Eddie Grasser, the wildlife conservation director for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The state conducts periodic drawings for permits to hunt bears, caribou, moose and other animals in various regions. Winners are chosen by a lottery, and there are typically many more applications than hunting tags awarded.

"We get thousands of applications," Grasser said. Whether anyone wins, he said, comes down to "pure chance, luck of the draw."

But in the case of the bear-hunt permit that the president's son won, there was little competition. Twenty-four tags for hunting bears in that region went unclaimed, Grasser said.

Winners of the state's latest hunting-permit drawings were announced on Friday.

To follow through with the Nome-area bear hunt, Trump must pay a $1,000 non-resident tag fee and buy a $160 non-resident hunting license, Grasser said.

The president's eldest son is an avid hunter and has made several trips to hunt in Alaska and Canada.

He is scheduled to come to Alaska later this year to hunt deer and ducks.

The Safari Club this month raffled off a $150,000 seven-day "dream hunt" expedition with Trump Jr. The raffle winner got the right to accompany the president's son on a yacht traveling in November along coastal areas of the Tongass National Forest.

popcorn So, what else is newsworthy? Likely, not much if this is in the news. Big Grin Tag and hunting license are standard fees for anyone hunting grizz/brownies. And, it doesn't sound like the Russians interfered in the permitting process. rotflmo

The question should be if they are not selling all the permits why should one have to apply in the first place.

Shouldn't one just be-able to buy one over the counter.

There is no selling. 27 permits were available 3 people applied. You need to apply next year. tu2

The question is why does one have to apply.

Why can not one just buy a license and go hunting.

If they then sell 27 they shut the sale down.

Yes, that's the law of the land in AK unless he's hunting with a close relative. Why is this newsworthy? It is a little disconcerting that the names of successful applicants are so easily obtained and misused.
Regardless of your opinion of certain political types, it worries me that the information could be weaponized by the successors to Timothy Treadwell's brand of idiocy.

I had the occasion to speak with him face to face and found him to be quite genuine about hunting. I could tell he was more about the experience than just "whack and stack" a trophy.

Best of luck to him!

Doesn't make much difference when his father considers hunting a "horror show".

Regardless of this, why this is a news item is anyone guess.

Permits are issued for any hunter, so the media singling him for this report is nothing but utter stupidity, as usual!

Saeed, thanks for your sensible, and knowledgeable, comments. On this as well as the forum about asking for refunds on deposits.

That is fine if they are selling out all the tags but for that unit they are not no need for a drawing there

Went and looked at his posts. On hunting and shooting, pretty good stuff. But on anything related to Trump or Politics - serious case of TDS.

I do not comprehend why there is any controversy over this. He got drawn in a drawing where all tags were not issued.

I have met him before. He is damn serious about hunting. He gave a hell of a speech at SCI.

Yeah, I fail to understand the TDS from firearms owners and hunters. Democrat platform right now is to restrict gun rights and trophy hunting. Not to mention the tax policies etc..

Defies logic.

But didn't the last gun control law come from trump? Don't be so sure he isn't done yet.

Bump stocks only and that was an ATF interpretation. He signed no gun control laws per se. NICS act was bi-partisan, but dealt with record keeping.

He will talk about universal background checks etc. to placate the Democrats (my thinking) and then do nothing.

But he still had to approve it. Point is never trust any politician to do what the ran on especially when it comes to guns or wildlife management.

Remember the Brady bill from Reagan?

The only thing Reagan had to do with the bill was that Brady was shot at the same time Reagan was.

The bill was introduce long after Reagan was out of office and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton

The original legislation was introduced into the House of Representatives by Representative Charles E. Schumer[3] in March 1991,[1] but was never brought to a vote. The bill was reintroduced by Rep. Schumer on February 22, 1993 and the final version was passed on November 11, 1993. It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on November 30, 1993, and the law went into effect on February 28, 1994. The Act was named after James Brady, who was shot and wounded by John Hinckley Jr. during an attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981

Good point. The old fart probably can't change her own diaper, and probably gets lost just when going out to pee out of her tent. Heck, she probably shit.. her diaper if she hears a gunshot.
