Read an interesting article recently about the origin of Rin Tin Tin. In WW1 they used the G.sheppards to go out on the battlefields after the machine gun carnage. The dogs could tell if a body was dead or just wounded. That saved the medics a lot of time. One of the trainers/handlers came upon a kennel that had been hit by shells,killing all but one pup. He nursed it + trained it + when the war was over went to Hollywood.He was the 1st RTT + there were many more but that was the beginning.
