H4350 has been recommended to me as a good powder in these rounds, anyone have loads they'd share? Thanks.

To my way of thinking the various 4350 powders are too slow burning for the whelen. I use powders in the IMR 4064, H4895 range. Others may have had success with H4350 in the whelen, I haven't.

I don't load for the 35 Whelen currently but load for a couple 257 Roberts and the IMR version of 4350 definitely works like a charm, top notch accuracy and good velocity with 110 and 117 grain bullets, Reloader 17 is also great.
I've found that for lighter bullets like 100's the IMR 4064 is pretty good performer.

4350 is too slow for the whelen. AA 2015 on the fast end and 4064 / Varget on the slow end. 200 to 250’s in my rifle. 225 Barnes x is the hammer of Thor at 2700 +FPS.
Of course all the 250 cup and core or partition bullets are too. Whelen is just the real deal.

I agree. My go to Whelen powder has been Rlr 15, but almost anything typically used for the .308 W works well. IE; 4895, 4064, Varget, etc. 4320 is supposed to be exceptional in the Whelen, but Ive not tried it yet.

IMR 4350 is my go to powder in the Bob, but mine is the AI version. So you dont want my loads.

I have used IMR 4350 in the 257 for years, from 87 gr to 120 gr bullets, nice results.

I shot a Whelen from 1979 to 1993, and the main powder back then we used was H380 with very good results.

Might try RL17 or RL16 in that Whelen.

RL-17 and H 4350 are two peas in a pod but for heavy 275-300 gr they make good low pressure low velo excellent killers...don't know about RL-16 not available in my area but would VERY MUCH like to try some.

CFE 223, Alliant Power Pro, Varmint and RL-15 and 8208 are good ones to try...they work well in my 338-06 and 9.3 x 62s with heavy bullets. Many of the powders in the burn rate range of WW748 to WW760 can be used with various bullet weights...just have to try some. Reloading manuals and online reloading links are full of the 35 Whelen.

So many powders, so many bullets...so many cartridges. You can go blind, deaf and dumb trying to find the "right" one. Roll Eyes

You did not say what bullet weight you were using. I guessed at 225gr Partition. Quickload said RL17, H414, Big Game and N550, in that order. Said that you cannot get enough RL16 in case, to bulky.

I always liked IMR-4320 in the Whelen and 338/06 for top velocity..The Robts is best with IMR-4350 and I like RL-16, 15, and H-414..I suspect I have used more H414 in the 257 Robts and the Ackley version and it measures so easy and so accurately I lean towards it..

BTW, Ive been playing with CFE-223 in thee 25 calibers and loving it so far, we will see..and it does clean the bore, with a number of shots.

In my M70 Featherweight 257 I use:
100 gr.Hornady SP
48.0gr H4350
Fed 210
WW Case
3143 fps
This is 3 grains over the Hodgdon 44K CUP manual maximum, so it's for strong actions and needs to be worked up to carefully.

Use the right powder and know your powder measure and you would be surprised that your only use of the scale would be to set your powder measure to the required load..I seldom use my 4831, 4350, etc. as I detest grain cutting that makes accurate loading require a scale...

Powders like H414, H335, H322, WW-748, RL-15,17,19 and 22 I seldom weigh any more, just eyeball them and weith what looks strange, but they always weigh spot on..Some of that accuracy is consistency of movement on each charge thrown I suspect..Ive been challenged on this a few times so invited the doubters over and made a bet of $50 cents, $50 dollars or lunch..Alway win.. Come on over,we will gamble on your terms. tu2

Give this a try, do some testing, let me know the results..

you can go higher than that with 4350, For some reason the factories Bumsteads have always under loaded the 257 Robts..A good Robts can be loaded to the same high pressures as the 270 WCF, as much as 55,000 to 60,000 PSI..I can see their fear of lawsuits with the metrics in some cases, but why the 275 Robts I cannot understand.
