"Well, no...Honey...No...No...Yes, you can have the new Vacuum cleaner. Right, found one on sale. Right. Great deal. DYSON??? We only have ONE RUG? Yes Dear. Right, Vacuum. For the HouseKeeper."

First the good news: that isn't MY wife! LOL! But I have friends who go through that every time. No, my wife said while looking over my shoulder: "Oh, that's pretty. Gonna get it?"

Ok ok, it didn't quite happen that way either. Actually, we were driving off to Frazier Mountain for a bit of camping. Mostly though it's to let the dogs run around in the mountain and try to get the FJ stuck. I'm booting around on the IPhone interwebs (letting her drive through Los Angeles traffic...) when I spot a great deal on GunsAmerica.

5.5" Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in .45 Colt. Stainless. New in box. $479.

Yeah, been looking for that exact model for a while at a price I could stomach.

I waited for traffic to slow down before showing her. "Oh, that's nice. Gonna get it?"

Where's the "buy it now" button? dancing Yes I actually just clicked "buy it now" off an IPhone in Los Angeles traffic. Technology rocks.

(I do love my wifey. Never says no to a new gun!)

I'll post pix in a week when it gets down here to SoCal.

Regardless, I'm planning on putting together two or three main loads. First is a 250 gr. bullet (prolly RN) with some HP-38/231 powder or perhaps unique. Really not looking for more than 900-1000 fps.

Second is a mid-hot load. 335gr. or 360gr. Trueshot GC at around 1000 fps. I figure 2400 should be about perfect here. Perhaps Unique.

Third is a full bore load. Max H110 loadings, 335/360gr. load. This would be for fun mostly. Maybe bear defense if I ever get out into Alaskan bear or the like. But mostly for fun.

Any suggested loads? Thoughts on the 335gr vs. 360gr. bullets? There's a ton of data out there, I'm just looking to see what works for y'all.

Regards,

Robert

You've picked a winner with that 45 Bisley, they are great sixguns! Maybe you already have some RN on hand, if not a SWC is usually better, didn't say more accurate, just better. Your second load at 1000 fps & those big, heavy slugs will handle anything out there, including the big bears & you'll probably be able to shoot that load much better than load #3. If you are comfortable with the last load then by all means use it, but I wouldn't load to many of them until you find out your recoil tolerance.
When going to the heavy weight slugs the slower powders usually work best, 2400, H110, AA#9, etc. For a lighter load 9 grs of Unique will get you around 1000 fps with a 250-260 gr slug, 18.5 grs of 2400 will usually run about 1100+ fps from your barrel length.
When you get into the real heavy slugs, 340 & above you are actually getting beyond what the 45 case wants, not saying it won't work, just that those slugs are better off in a 454.
Good luck with your new toy, its a dandy!

Robert,

Yes, the 335 gr will work quite well. Mine was the LBT WFN GC ahead of a max charge of Lil'Gun for about 1150 fps my 4-5/8" NMBH.

I have the exact same 5.5" Bisley and love it. I shoot the 335gr over a heavy dose of 110 for right around 1250fps. It really gets your attention. I also load a 300gr that I cast from a lee mold with unique for plinking. It is pushing between 800-900fps. It is far more comfortable to shoot the heavy bullets out of the Bisley than my blackhawk.

That was in response to the above poster styating he would take 330s in .44 mag at 1,400 over the .45 Colt load. Since we went down that road, I pulled my "trump card" -- so to speak! Big Grin

Yes, but then you have to buy dies, brass, bullets (at LEAST two or three types), more powder, gun case, holster, new gun safe, vacuum cleaner...

Damn, these guns ain't so cheap after all! rotflmo

I'm thinking I'll need a holster to pack this baby. Triple K Cheyenne or the Galco SAO are my leading choices. I like the Cheyenne because it hangs lower on the hip, but I also like the SAO's dual carry position.

It's a single action though...the Cheyenne is kinda leading the way.

Kinda fond of the Laramie too...

What do you guys think?

Robert

Whit,

I wish I'd shot that bear. That's the bear I went after the same day I shot my moose. His coat was gorgeous! He missed the book my 1/16 of an inch. My best bud Dan shot that hog. The rug is fantastic.

Ken,

If you're referring to the sight in on my 4-5/8" NMBH in the holster, it's a Trijicon RedDot sight. They come in 4 or 8 MOA. Extremly light and tough as nails. My only issue with it is having to remove the sight to change out batteries and then resighting it. The Trijicon RMR takes care of that issue and is "click" adjustable. It's quite nice for aging eyes too.

I just picked up a SS BBH in 45 Colt. Mine even came with the 45ACP cyinder. I have been looking for one fo these for years now at a reasonable price but all I ever found was 7.5" guns. So I own 2 of those as well.

After I get back from africa the SS gun and one of the 7.5" guns are likely headed either to Linegbaugh or to Hamilton Bowen.

Any velocity a 44 mag can get, a 45 colt can get with a heavier bullet. Its simple case capacity. Its all good.

Depending on barrel length... A quick run through Quickload shows the 44 load could be in the range of 45-50k psi(assumeing 7.5" barrel)
I'm not saying that I haven't gone there, but at the time I didn't know just how hard I was pushing things.
Similar numbers in Quickload shows a 45colt around 32-35k.
