FrownerAfter one month of cleaning copper out of the .270-Mod 200 Stevens we gave it a work out at the range. The first thing my buddy learned was you could not feed the cartridges from the magazine unless you operated at light speed. they just pop right out of the rifle.

Next the trigger failed to work about every 10th shot. Contrary to what I said in the past this is not the type rifle to buy and take out into the woods.

2 primers were blown even though it was a normally light load. This has happened before with this rifle. The velocities were not even close to what a .270 should be able to do. (I hear you Hot Core)

The real stinkoo came when I closed the bolt and the rifle went off taking out 2 of my sky screens on my Oehler. The trigger pull is right at 5 lbs.
boohoo
One bright spot was the 130gr. Speer sp, driven by 22.5gr. of blue dot at 2000 fps. was very accurate with a light recoil. thumb

The Mod. 200 Stevens with a Shaw .250-3000, 24", long throated barrel work flawlessly. A 120 gr. Speer BT, was driven with only 38 gr. of IMR 4831 and achieving 2790 fps. 2" group @ 200yds. Roll Eyes

With the same bullet, case, OAL and primer 39.6gr. DP 85 = same velocity and a 1 1/2" group at 200yds.No feed or trigger problems with this shorter action.

No rattle snakes today. digginroger

Sure doesn't say much about Savage quality or at least the quality of the 200's. Ya think this turd slipped through the cracks or are they all a bunch of turds from the get go? I guess one shouldn't expect a whole lot for 300 bucks, but the one you've got doesn't sound like it's worth 10 bucks. I'd say there's a serious safety issue with that trigger.

You ain't wrong pardner. I was going to swap out this barrel with a Shaw 6.5 X 55 that I had made up but I'm really thinking ----Why? thumbdown

The mod. 200 in .223 is ok, the 22-250 is ok as a single shot and the 250-3000 looks OK so far. The .270 we've looked at. The .223 in 12vbss-s has definite trigger problems. What is a mother to do?

For a paper shooter I guess this might not be all bad. Think twice if you intend to use the mod. 200 in the field unless you have given it a thourough break in.

After being such an advocate of the Savage products I can say that I'm totaly disallusioned with their actual performance as a marketable product. Truely this is objective as I know how to get. hammering thumbdownShine it on! roger

bartsche,
A fair enough assessment as you've given them every possible chance. My Stevens in 308Win is going fine except for a slightly stiff bolt lift. "Broke" the barrel in with 50 rounds of ex-mil 308Win and it cleaned up okay. Only major problem was a failure to feed because the idiot operator Roll Eyes put the magazine follower in backwards.
Cheers...

"What is a mother to do?"

I think Mom ought to send it back to the factory along with a "motherly" love note.

Should already be headed that way instead of fighting it.

There is a rule that applies to all firearms, not just Savage: You must absolutely be at least 3% smarter than the firearm, in order to safely and reliably operate said firearm. moon

Sounds like someone has been playing with the safety on that gun. If not you maybe the factory didn't get it right. Can't figure out whats going on that you would get an occasional "blown primer". It would appear if there was something physically wrong with the gun it would reach a level and do it all the time. I have a 300 win in a savage/stevens and it's been a pretty flawless gun. Shoots decent, fair trigger from the factory, feeds reliably...and it actually gets real good velocity without blowing primers. BUT it's no match for the Tikka T3 I just picked up in the same caliber. It is definately worth the extra $250 over and above the Savage. My Savage will be up for sale this fall but I won't feel guilty selling it to anyone.
