Looks like Cabelas has reduced their prices on the Dakotas they have, from $1,000 to $2,500 per rifle.

Seems like the best deals are on the Model 76 Classics in .375 H&H. But no iron sights. That just ain't right.

I wondered if they ordered a bunch with base wood and no options, hoping to capitalize on the Dakota name.

Yes, that's one thing with Dakota...anything with more character than your basic 2x4 is considered "exhibition" :-)

I actually called them about a used Dakota they have in stock, and the salesman wanted to sell me a brand new boat paddle model for way, way less than the better looking, but jacked-up used one.

I know some people seem to have success dealing with the Cabelas gun library folks, but I'm not in that number. I think I'm about 1 for 50 on attempts to buy guns from the gun libraries.

I have never bought a gun library gun. When I lived near Cabelas I called and had a 202 9.3x62 plus a 8x57 barrel sent in. It had a broken stock when it came in.

Any other time I have called on a gun it has already been sold. They can't keep track of anything there.

I too have tried dealing with the Cabelas gun library. I have come to the conclusion that they could absolutely anger the Pope with the way they do business.

I have bought two of the finest rifles I have ever owned in the Cabelas.

I was in the Cabelas here today talking with the Gun Library manager. I told him that the Cabelas store is a compliment to our sport and hobby.

I routinely find great deals at my local Cabelas. Like the early SS CRF 22" M70 Classic in 30-06 for $425 about three years ago.

So you lied? Wink

I'm of the opinion that they're not really interested in selling firearms. The crap they make you go through in order to buy one would give most people that idea.

1. Take a number.
2. Wait for your number to be called.
3. Wait some more.
4. Finally talk to an associate about what you'd like to buy but can't touch until you're helped.
5. Have your firearm taken to the "buy desk".
6. Wait to pay for said firearm.
7. Do you have any other shopping to do?
7a. Yes? Well, the firearm you just purchased can go in the safe until you're ready to leave.
7b. No? Someone will escort you from the store carrying the firearm you purchased.
8. Wait for the person in the orange vest to arrive.
9. Get walked out of the store with said firearm where you can finally take possession of it on the sidewalk out front.
10. Thank you and good f'ing day.

From start to finish, it took almost two and a half hours. I concluded that they didn't really want my repeat business, and I haven't disappointed them yet.

One of the dumbest things about them is the difference in pricing. One store gun-x is $1000 and the next it is $2500.

We did not say that you can't buy them out of the library. We are just saying it is damn near impossible to get even a decent deal on one there. I have struck out many, many, many times.

I asked them about trades a couple years ago.

They told me that the max they will generally give you on trade is 60% of what they expect to get for it.

They offered $900 for a mint, in the box 8" 45 wildey magnum with two spare magazines on an OM 70 Target in 300H&H.

I can't deal with them either...

I bought a gun from them that was defective. I returned it and it took 3 months to get a refund check from "corporate". I then received a 1099 at year end. Since I was sent a check, I was a vendor in their system. What a mess, never again!!!

Usually Cabelas is a bit overpriced but there are exceptions. Years ago, I wanted a CZ 550 Safari Magnum. I called several local gun stores and finally Cabelas. Cabelas had 3 of them priced several hundred dollars less than the others I called.

The one I got also has pretty nice wood.

The Cabelas here in E. Hartford is excellent like the ones we visited previously in Hamburg, PA and S. Dakota. I find their stores a compliment to our sport and my wife likes to go as the places are spectacular inside with the diorama they have plus good snacks and clothing.

I found another one of the finest rifles I own in Cabelas recently at an excellent price. The transaction on it went fast and smooth.

Here is that custom rifle with nice wood and checkering. It's a .300 Win. mag chamber which I don't favor however I can handload the way I want it. The action is a pre-64 M70!

It is a nice place to shop, they have millions of items I don't need but want very badly.

Saying that, the gun business is ran with no normality across the stores.

It is infuriating to look on their website and visit the stores and see 20-50% difference in prices store to store.

Or to see a 2nd hand gun for $100 more than a new one they have in stock in the same caliber.

My wife has tried to shop for me there and vowed never to go back because of poor service and incompetence. My 6-year old daughter and I make the hour drive now and then. We call it the "quiet zoo" and she loves it.
That said, I've never had a successful transaction with the "Gun Library".

I've bought a couple on line from Cabelas. Usually went OK, but last wanted to charge me 8% tax on a $2800 gun. (We have no sales tax in Oregon!)After some argument, they waved the tax.

Wish my local Cabelas had deals like that. They currently have a SS M70 Classic in 30-06, but the price is $800. I have bought three rifles from three different cabelas in the last year with no issues, and great customer service. While they are way over priced much of the time, good deals can be had. Picked up two Lightweight Supergrade model 70 on closeout during Black Friday at about half original price. The original price was insanely high, but I feel like I got a decent deal. In fact, I payed about what one would pay for a standard featherweight in those calibers (257 Roberts and 7x57).

Our store is generally overpriced, but I have gotten two decent deals there. A M700 .270 ADL with slight cosmetic issues for $250 and a Sako L461 .222 Mag in a custom stock for $800. Most of the stuff in the used racks is priced new and some of it is ridiculous such as POS last ditch Mausers that are half butchered for $500-600. I took them half a dozen guns I inherited to see what they would give me and clear up space in the safes. Walked out with all of them after they offered 250 each for three VG-Ex Belgian Browning A5s. Same guns they have at 600+ in the library. I know they need to make money, but some of this is insulting.

Having owned 3 Dakota's 2 M-97's and one M-76 I have to say that I continue to be severely under whelmed by Dakota rifles.

M-404 was an African model. It shot well but the blueing was turning purple due to improper temperature during the bluing process and the magazine box was made out of some kind of tin foil like metal which failed at approximately 100 rounds. I got all of it fixed and the rifle is primo now but with what I paid for that thing it should not have needed any aftermarket repairs.

My M-97's were in .330 DAK and the other a light weight hunter in .300 WM. The .300WM never did iron out and had function and accuracy issues it's whole life.

You are money ahead to simply buy a M-70 and have some custom work done to it or go with CZ that has been AHR'd. Just sayin'.

The Cabelas price for a M-97 synthetic even at $1,000 off is obscene for what you are getting. You can but the EXACT same rifle which is a Baretta Mato for 2 to $3,000 grand less. The ONLY difference in a M-97 is that it is Baretta Mato that has been stamped Dakota.

RIP OFF!!

Cabela's is not the only one discounting post-cherry picker-plain wood Dakota's. When retailers order for stock, they get no preference to wood choice I've been told. You may have an advantage if you order one just the way you want it through a retailer as they/Dakota will let you choose your blank. Just keep requesting more blanks until a nice one comes up.

Here's one with some dandy wood that hasn't been cherry-picked yet at FSGuns. I expect this wouldn't have lasted long at Cabelas considering that the price is $3,995.00

I have one firearm purchasing experience with Cabela's and it was a disappointment to be kind. It was mail order so that has to be taken into consideration a little.

It was a drilling and if I remember correctly the price was in line or it wouldn't have caught my eye. I found out why when it arrived. The person I talked to on the phone told me it was 'tight to face'. Maybe it's just me but I never considered .020 off face tight. That was bad enough. Upon further examination I found that on the frame, between where the locking lugs enter was broken from one cutout to the other. When I called them and told them I was returning the drilling I never received as much as an "oh my". I wonder if they're still trying to sell it or they found some poor fella who didn't know about such things. I did see it still advertised. I know that's one fella in one store but sheesh...one would think that person would be a bit better informed. Cost me about $100.00 just in shipping and we all know I'm likely to get that back.
