Hunters sought for deer culling in Stevens Point
May 1, 2023
Metro Wire Staff

Stevens Point is seeking proposals from area hunters to perform deer culling during the 2023-24 archery season.

Up to 50 deer will be culled from September through January during legal hunting hours and only on specific properties identified by the city.

Discharging bows and crossbows within city limits is usually prohibited, though special permission to do so will be granted to the winning bidder.

Proposals should be for a “per deer” unit price basis, and vendors (hunters) need to meet a number of requirements before being considered:

Carry $1 million in liability insurance.
Hold a valid Wisconsin archery hunting license (city will provide harvest permits/tags).
Vendor and additional hunting partners must pass a criminal background check and must possess a valid driver’s license. Anyone with a felony conviction is considered ineligible.
Receive the permitted hunting properties list from the Stevens Point Deer Management Committee.
Hunt only on those permitted properties throughout the 2023-24 hunting season.
Legally harvest up to 50 deer.
Properly remove entrails from deer upon harvest, report deer harvest data through the Wisconsin deer harvest reporting system and maintain harvest records.
Legally transport deer to People’s Meat Market for processing in a timely fashion to preserve meat.
Submit harvest records, location of harvest, registration information and invoicing upon completion of program to the Deer Management Committee.
Interested persons should complete the form found here and submit it to the city’s parks department, 2442 Sims Ave., by 10 a.m. on Friday, May 19.

I would not be surprised did they not get a single acceptable proposal. f they do, it will likely be for several times the money they are anticipating. I bet it goes on the high side of $600/deer. You would have to be crazy to get into something that smells of a committee mess like this one does. At the least, the restriction to specific designated properties tells me that they will be damned lucky to get anywhere near the 50 deer they are looking to cull, and doing this only inside established deer season means that they will need a bunch of hunters if they even hope for half that when the deer will have a large portions of the city as sanctuary. This looks very much to me like a CF designed to fail.
