Anyone know of any hunting there other than birds? I've been doing some research and can't find much.
What do y'all know?

CumbrianI beleive that a certain sub species of whitetail deer live there.

billrquimbyAccording to Jack Schwabland, author of the natural history text in the SCI record books, Colombia has two whitetail subspecies: O.v. tropicalis and O.v. goudotil.
It also has jaguar, puma, ocelot, jaguarundi, Gray-brown and red brocket deer, collared and white-lipped peccaries, and the northern pudu (at only about 20 pounds, it is the world's smallest deer).
My record books are more than ten years old, but the only entry I could find for Colombia was a northern pudu taken by Hector Cuelar Jr. in 1980.
Others will have better information, but I suspect that while hunting in Colombia might be legal, few outsiders are willing to go there because of the real or perceived danger from encountering drug cartels operating in the back country.

Gayne C. YoungThanks for all the info and sorry about the misspelling. I was snorting Colombian at the time I wrote it.
Also, I hear from some Colombian expats here that things have really, really changed for the better down there.

billrquimbyI Googled "hunting in Colombia" and got a website for U.S. embassy workers. Toward the bottom of a long article, a single paragraph told about the need to buy Colombian hunting and fishing licenses and said that all firearms (even those imported by diplomats) must be registered with the Colombian government.
So, it's probably safe to say there is hunting going on down there.
The same website mentioned that there were places that Americans definitely should avoid.

Gayne C. YoungBill,
Spoke with my Columbian buddy last night who confirmed hunting for everything you mentioned. He also talked about the hippos down there. All very interesting stuff.
Am working hard to get something lined up for next year.

billrquimbyYour Colombian buddy must be thinking about some other animal, perhaps capybera, tapir or manatee? There are no hippos outside of Africa, except in zoos.

Gayne C. YoungBill,
Pablo Escobar brought in some hippos for his private zoo when he was a major drug lord. When he fell from grace the hippos went into the jungle in search of food. They found it and multiplied. They've had a few hunters take some already.
