Santiago_DMTapir is a native specie of Paraguay as for other countries around. As far as I know it is forbidden cause its a endangered specie like the Jaguarete and many other in Paraguay rain forest jungle.
I was told that local government and SCI are trying to start a hunting management program over several species. Jimbo sometimes gets special authorizations on these type of species and I wont be surprised if this part of the management program action plan.
Several endangered species are being "reduced" by farmers and poachers in areas of Paraguay, sometimes because farmers defend their property ( like Jaguarete attacking domestic cattle ) or sometimes because the people runs over wild forest to deploy crops and they see no profit on preserving the wildlife in healthy conditions. Greenpeace is doing its part but its not enough... I think that the alternative of having profitable management programs like Africa´s parks is the best way to preserve wildlife balance. SCI chapter in Paraguay for sure is working on that sense.

MOA TACTICALShocky's quasi-celebrity status and lack of an American passport probably opens some doors a lot of folks from Infidel Countries don't have.
Jim gets to have a lot of fun that's for sure.
Not sure what the "trophy" part of a tapir is? They are closer to horses and rhinos than pigs, odd toed ungulate and all.

scruffyI hunted tapir in the South American jungles a long time ago. (not Paraguay) My lady shot hers in the middle of the night. I was sitting with a young man in a boat that was once a single tree .. he was whistling ... and several tapir were answering from different parts of the jungle. Margaret and the guide were crouched in the long grass waiting on the shore ... eventually one came close, a light came on, and the shot was taken ... This was not one's average hunting moment for a Canadian. !!! My, oh my. Without refrigeration available the animal was chopped up and given to all the folks living nearby ... I remember it as being tasty ... and weird looking ...

sandyhunterIt was taken on Faro Moro, Rocky McBride's estancia in the Chaco. Rocky has been working with the government for years in an effort to reopen big game hunting in Paraguay. For Shockey's tapir, a special permit was issued.

sandyhunterNote also that it's an Appendix II animal, so all that is needed to get it home is a CITES export permit. I understand that the government issued one for Shockey's animal, but the trophy was lost at some point in the shipping process.
