NickuduSouth American Hunting LOGO
What in your view would be a proper animal to feature in Logo for this Forum? I assume we would want an indigenous animal that is or was at some point in time known as a primary game species? Please, what are your thoughts on this?
Jaguar. Otherwise you've got your Salinas sheep, the 4 horned ram and the puma. I've never even seen a picture of a Salinas sheep or a 4 horned ram. What do they look like?

LorenzoNot a difficult question to answer my friend.
There is only one animal in south America that deserve such honour....the jaguar
The third biggest cat in the world.
L
16 July 2007, 01:32
LorenzoThe four horned ram or any other kind of sheep are just put and take animals in fenced properties and they are so indigenous to us as the african elephant

billinthewildThe problem with the jaguar is that it too closely resembles a leopard and I do not feel it offers enough distinction. One of your indigenous deer would work well. And although I like the idea of the Dogo, that would be an Argentine symbol.
Perhaps Cesar Chavez hanging from a gallows would be appropriate since so many SA govermentrs seem to be following his lead. He is an animal and should be considered a game species to be hunted and eradicated.

NickuduI figure, if I were to select a hunting Logo for India, for example, it must be a Tiger, whether or not the tiger remains a viable hunting species today. The Tiger simply says "India" in my mind, more so than any other species. Similarly, the Jaguar says Central and South America to me, more so than any other species.
16 July 2007, 23:36
LorenzoNice pic Nick !!

No animal more exotic and shadowy than the jaguar.
L
17 July 2007, 02:35
Woodrow SDoes anyone know how many Jaguars still reside in the wilds of Central and South America? Rough estimate of course. Are they gaining ground as in re-populating? Just curious.
17 July 2007, 02:58
LorenzoIn same places there are lots of them, I know a farmer who complains that every year there are more and more despite he kills a few of them every year to protect his cattle.
I have been in another friend's farm and the farm worker in charge told me that a week earlier he saw a fresh cow kill partially eaten by a tigra and her cubs.
Locals call them tigres.

nainitalI guess that no one knows for sure how many jaguars still remain roaming the woods in Argentina and Brasil. From first hand, I know of a place where 34 of them live. Of course, is a very large property and the owner doesn´t hunt them, which is forbidden by Argentine law. The jaguar is considered a natural monument and the fines are extremely heavy, including jail. Anyway, all the years some pelts appear in the illegal circuit.
I´ve seen the melanistic variation in Mexico and it is very impressive. In a zoo near Cancún there is an enormous one which I filmed (no, not in a digital camera and I don´t figure how to upload it to Youtube). The pumas there were also inmense.
My vote goes to the humble sus scrofa, the poor man´s main trophy here.

17 July 2007, 18:33
LorenzoNainital,
The Sus Scrofa is not indigenous to South America. Plenty of jaguars roaming free in Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia, all Central America..etc etc

AfrikaanderWhilst I admit I am a biiiiig fan of the dogos, I think we should choose that "special" animal (obviously located in almost all south america) which, when looking at it (or even thinking about it) our first reaction would be a strong desire of hunting it (or at least to test ourselves trying to ) - and not hunting "with" it, as happens with these noble and unconditional hunting partner any of these dogs are ....
Actually, perhaps in the near future we could ask Don & Saeed to create a new forum specifically about knife hunting with dogs... and THAT would be the place in which we could use the image of our big game hunter / warrior dogs in its full meaning and status

as its logo

So basically, these are the main big game that can be found in this southern part of the hemisphere:
Hogs, thou I think they are sometimes an extremely challenging and demanding prey, are in fact not indigenous ...
Javelinas are indigenous, but they are not that much representative, besides they are the logo of the Hogs forum ...
Tapirs, thou a great beast, aren´t very charismatic ...
Red stags, water buffalo, axis, fallow, cervicapras and sheep / goats deserves, IMHO, the same considerations I wrote about hogs ...
Those sort of roe deers we can find here are also great trophies and their hunt is in fact an unforgetable experience, but hasn´t got many enthusiastic followers ... as also happens with the some other species of deer (many of them unknown or discouraged by the prohibition of their hunt, something made in a proper way sometimes - while others this prohibition is done with total ignorance of the needed and basic info.....
So, I think we must then look to the cats´ side ... cougars and jaguars ... not to devaluate the cougars at all, but jaguars ARE the type of prey every hunter would surely dream to accomplish

and nowadays their mysticism has gone even higher, due to the fact that it is very difficult (almost impossible) we might ever happen to hunt any of them - at leasts in the right way.... BTW Ricardo, just curious, but where exactly is that large property situated ?
So Jaguar would be my choice !!
And Nick, a picture of a melanistic specimen would be even nicer

NickuduHi Martin! I'm quite sure that Don will be happy to position any Logo the South American Forum "regulars" might select. Certainly, it need not be one of those I have posted!

They are from my "Jaguar File". I like them all.

That would be nice, since I think that the picture chosen by Don - thou nice - doesn't represent the whole magnficence jaguars have ....
What do you think, Don ? Is it possible to change the pic featured ?

ReiterGreat pic.
When I think of a world wide known hunter of South America, the first name that comes to my mind is Sasha Siemel, "o tigrero", and the jaguar represent his image and history very well. As said by our argetine neighbors, hunting hogs with knife is a truly south american way of hunting, so it is to hunt jaguars with a spear, as the natives did and taught so many white hunters how to do it.
Anyway, nice pic !!
Altough the black jaguar is a little more exotic !
See you guys.

NickuduColonel Bilgewater was hunting alone in dense jungle one morning when suddenly coming upon a small clearing. There, sunning herself on a luxurious, pink satin blanket, was a naked young woman of indescribable beauty. Trembling with eager anticipation, the old Colonel called out to her: "Are you game?". With a look of surprised delight, she responded demurely: "Why yes, I certainly am". So he shot her.
