NormanConquestI have a preacher friend that has a theory concerning tortillas. When Cortez came to the new world, back in Spain the Inquistion was in full swing. There were LOTS of jews ready to get out of Spain + signed on as non jews but listed as pioneers with Cortez's force. When they stayed in Mexico they hid their religious belief on the passover unleavened bread by making tortillas. I think it a bit far fetched as I as ALMOST sure that tortillas were there before the 1500s Spanish invasion. However it was an interesting concept of an idea.

AtkinsonI may be wrong but I think the Penitentie indian were the inventors of corn Tortillas, and the Spanish copied the recipe with flour and thus the flour tortilla...I read that somewhere and it makes since as the Indians had no flour other than corn..Called it Masa and Twahea or something like that, depending on the tribe. The Mexican also used Masa for cornmeal.
Bread makers could have quit when the Tortilla came about, both corn and flour are to be crowned the kings of bread.
